Rented a lens to take to Magee tomorrow. Just got it and shot some pictures of Goldfinches on the feeder and the lens clearly focuses in front of the bird. I shoot a 40D so I can't dial in an adjustment.

Really bummed...
I think you mean "can't" but yes, that's a bummer.
40D is a consumer grade camera ... QA / spec on consumer grades can be at one end of the spectrum, while a lens might be at the other end of tolerance ... combined for a bit of an issue. I had a similar problem with my D70s and a lens that otherwise was fine.
Using arbitrary numbers ...
Individual Tolerance:
Pro Lens @ +/-2
Pro Camera @ +/-2
Consumer Camera @ +/-4
Combined:
The range on one camera could be from +/-4
The other camera could be @ +/-6
That was what made me decide to switch to 1D MK II.
Is it an event that you can manually focus and make it work? Lenses or the cameras do focus differently in other types of light, so maybe at the event it will focus more accurately. Have you tried continuous verses single shot focusing? Did you try the rented lens on different subjects? What will you be shooting?
