p.1 #1 · 7d now or wait until ?

I have a 10D, functional but slower than molasses. And a 30D my father in law broke ( it meters light WAY off). The 30D is a nice rig and I think it's worth repairing but I'm tempted to buy a 7D since it seems to represent a real leap in performance from my 30D. Question is, do you think the next gen of the 7D is coming it in the next few months. I know I need to get 30 fixed but I wonder if I should wait awhile to snag the latest greatest 7D improvement (I cannot afford a 5Dmk3). So, do I repair and wait or just buy the 7d as its currently available. Btw, I have only one lens, the tamron 27-75 di that wouldn't work if the new 7D is, in fact, full frame (I doubt it would be, but...). What would you guys suggest. Please let me know as I am torn at the moment.

I love this forum since so many knowledgable people hang out here. I send everyone I know here.

Thanks
Jared

I'd say if a 7D II is coming it will be announced at Photokina in late September and will be available late October at the earliest. If 30D repair isn't too much I'd hang on and maybe look at a lens if you need to, otherwise 7D or 1D III would be nice to get now.

Tamron 28-75 DI is a FF lens, it works on any Canon DLSR

I agree with Whayne.
A 7D replacement is not coming out in the next few months. Maybe by the end of the year.

If you're used to the 10D, then the current 7D will blow you away.

You have to ask yourself, how will 7D replacement change the way I shoot? Would a current 7D meet my needs? Do I really want to spend $500 more on the new one (just a guess on the pricing)? Or, would I get more mileage out of a new lens or two?
Then it'll be an easy decision.

There's always something new, and I don't think it's really worth waiting actively for it as the current offerings are so good anyway. If my camera broke down today, I'd buy a(nother) 7D. Well, I'd buy it tomorrow as today is a holiday in Germany. But definitely tomorrow.

A few points.
Why would the new 7D be full frame?

Why would your current lens not work? I presume when you put 27-75 you meant the 28-75 . That's a full frame lens.

If you can't go for the 5D3 then what would your budget be? A new 7D will not be the price the current one is. When the current one was released it was £1800 over here. Now it's down to about £1100

If you want to hang on for a new version then in the meantime why not pick up a 40D . It's a great little camera for what they cost now.

But having picked up a 7D a couple of months ago, I can say its a great camera.

I own a 7D and also have a 5DII. 7D might not have the IQ oc the 5DII (it is an APS-C with its limitations ) but it delivers very good images if you take time to process them in LR3 (especially to fix softness and noise ). It is very well built, very good for holiday, adventure travel, safari. I intensively used it in the jungles of southern Mexico or the mangroves of the Dominican Republic. It's autofocus is far more modern than the 5DII's and enables you to easily track birds, reptiles or mammals. It's metering system is accurate.

Agreed. Very unlikely a new 7d will be out in the next few months.

I think it's silly to wait. So what there will be new tech; you don't know what that new tech will be. The 7D, and even the 50D is somewhat new tech compared to what you have.

I have a 7D, 5Dc, and 20D. Yes, the 7D has "new tech" but it didn't do anything for my work other than add gadgetry that I like to play with. More importantly get great glass. Even so called old tech will look great....as long as you know what YOU are doing.

The 7D is awesome. I would get it now if I wanted a 1.6x camera.

Honestly, I don't understand you people that need to "spend time" in LR to "fix" noise and sharpness issues.

I've had my 7D for 2+ years, and my post processing is minimal ... 3 minutes on a picture tops on all of these.

I end up with a lot of soft images from 7D. Soft and snuggly.

Nothing worth having a hissy fit over, though.

Just call canon loyalty program and send in your 30D for replacement with a 7D. You will get 7D for around 1055+tax. Dont worry about MKII, for it will be a good bit more in price and 30D -> 7D is a major upgrade in almost all aspects.

If you need/want a 7d now, get it now.

Chances are that any 7d replacement will not be announced until late this year and be released late on top of that. That means early 2013 at best. On top of THAT, any changes will be evolutionary in nature and command a premium price over the current 7D... much like the 5DIII over the II -- nothing TOO fantastic in the III and IMHO overpriced. I think Canon stepped in it by pricing the 5DIII $500 over the D800 and $1,000 over the OLD price of the 5DII.

I went from a 10D (still own it) to a 40D. Put the right lens on a 40D and process files in LR4....stunning....

Got the 7D but I have some concerns about ISOs. They look great pushed but I have to shoot at higher ISOs to expose. I'll pose the concern in a new topic but input would be cool.

I just got a 7D about a month ago, my way of looking at it was that even if a new 7D came out now, I couldn't afford one till the price had dropped, so I may as well get the use of the current 7D till then.

Stealing a passage from G. Dan::
G. Dan Mitchell:: Rules about new cameras:
1. Some people will regard them as earthshaking and like to change the course of the universe.
2. Others will regard them as totally awful and despicable.
3. Owners of the other brand will often complain the most... except for owners of the same brand who take personal offense that their brand would offer up anything that was not the ultimately wonderful completely perfect thing.
4. Flaws will be found. Eventually the manufacturer will uncover some problem. There may be a recall. The problem is fixed.
5. The once new, astonishing camera that would change the world becomes older and more familiar.
6. The silliness dies down - or is redirected to fevered anticipation of the next perfect camera.

No camera is perfect. It doesn't matter what brand "wins." The "imperfect" cameras make fine photographs.

I believe Ancel Adams once was quoted," The best camera you can own is the one in your hands."
Stop waiting and start shooting...

I own a 7d and found it to be a tremendous improvement over any previous 1.6x canon camera.
