I went to shoot some motorsport over the past weekend and I noticed bright flare when my 200 f/2 is used with 1.4x II. without an extender, it's an amazing lens.. with, I was little disapointed.
I love the 200 for portraits but it seems to be short for motorsports.
photos were taken with 1d3 + 200 f/2 (with PL filter) + 1.4xII.
it almost has that look of fd lenses mounted on my 1d2 with fd to ef adapter.
to explain, I'll post up some photos later when I get off work.
anyone seen/experienced this phenomenon before? if yes, am I doing something wrong?
thanks in advance.
A couple things - first crank up your ISO so that your shots are approx 1/2500th range to ensure you are freezing action and your MkIII isn't your problem. You should definitely get sharp shots at 1/2500th+
If you are not getting sharp shots at 1/2500th+ then you need to look at your MkIII settings. Has it been in for the AI Servo fix? If not, send it in to Canon for a free repair and it should be a "one and done" fix. Once you rule out your AI servo, then you can start backing your SS back down until you get crisp bikes/riders with wheel motion. An easy way to do this is to shoot in AV mode - start at a high SS like 1/2500th and then dial down the SS in stages to find out where your sweet spot will be. Shoot the same corner to keep it consistent. 1/500 is about the lowest I would go
Your 200/2 with a 1.4x should be razor sharp. If your MkIII hasn't been into Canon you could send your 200 along with it for a calibration as well.
it isn't the MIII.. high serial... it's my technique that needs to be enhanced. Im so use to going to go cart tracks... I forget how fast the bikes are on a full track.
thanks for the great advise. Unless I'm panning, I'll keep the speed high.
Glad to be aboard FM- I might as well start off with a newbie question-
As I look down the page I notice there is a difference in the image sizes -not that size matters but Id rather not have my images looking like thumbnails compared to others-
I do have 20% keeper rate but was so disappointed with 200 f/2 on sport bike track. thought about adding 2x II to my collection but I think I want to pick up either 300 2.8 or 400 2.8 with 1.4x II or III.
I just need that extra reach.. 200 is good for go cart tracks but not nearly enough to get close on a full track.
