If you are doing the full subway from top to bottom then you have to swim as in the picture above. If you are only doing the lower part then it is just wading but the rock outcroppings you must cross are slippery as grease. I highly recommend taking at least one hiking pole, I prefer two when doing creek hikes. Be sure and look for the dinosaur footprints half way up the canyon. They are deep enough to put your hand in.
