p.1 #1 · How to shoot a silhouette. Please advise!

Hi,

I am trying to shoot a silhouette of a woman on a glossy surface maybe laying or sitting, such that you can see her reflection against a bright background (plain white).

Any suggestions as to how I can achieve such a look indoors? Can this also be achieved outdoors?

Any examples of pictures and setup of equipment/hardware/placement etc would be very much appreciated.

Thx
Max

You could use either a standard white background and light it with multiple strobes, or you could use a lighted BG like a Lastolite Hilite. In either case, set the BG lighting to read 2 or 3 stops over standard metering.

The surrounding walls and ceiling should be black, to prevent back scatter from the background throwing light on the subject. (You could also do it outdoors late at night.)

The subject should read 2 or 3 stops under standard metering. You would then have a 4 to 6 stop difference between subject and background, which should yield a nice silhouette effect. A little tweaking of contrast and brightness in Photoshop might help to make it look its best.
