Very interesting!
Is is already dead in the first shot? It looks like it's on it's back.
I know that herons will eat about anything they can get down and this doesn't surprise me. As someone else mentioned - when water is high (making ponds murky & hard to hunt) I've often seen them hunting ground squirrels and that is very interesting to watch them try to get those buggers down their throat (like watching a gull w/ a starfish).
I think we all need to ease ourselves w/ the thought that birds very commonly eat other birds, and many of these birds are as unrelated to each other as we are to other mammals (like a cow, or a deer ).
Really great job capturing these, way to be ready when the action is happening!

My cats occasionally bring in a small bird and the chickens steal it and eat it. Birds are still velociraptors at heart.
Someone asked me for chicken eggs that are 'vegan' once. Yeah, right. Can they eat 10 pounds of bugs and wash it down with a bit of finch and a mouse and still be vegan? Nope.
I bet Mr. Blue went and took a loooong nap after choking down such a large meal.

the dove must have flown into a coral bolder and broke it's neck as it could not get back on it's feet and erratic movement is what brought the Heron to the scene. I'm just guessing.
