Good point. However, if you are using Lightroom 4, there is a box in the Develop module that you can check off for automatic CA removel. How well it works I don't know but if you have LR-4 it's worth checking out this feature, as this may solve the CA problem.

Thanks everyone! I usually prefer the 70-200 when I'm back lighting especially because I don't have problems with chromatic aberration with that lens. When you are shooting an area of high contrast (back lit hair next to a darker background for example) you will definitely get the CA with the 85L unless you close down significantly. When you do that, you really lose that great bokeh the lens is otherwise capable of. In that case, I'd choose the 70-200L because I can still shoot wide open at 200mm (granted, I'm a football field away from my subject but that isn't

Sell your 85L and 70-200 and pick up a used 200/2 (and maybe an 85/1.8). You won't miss either lens after using the 200/2.

He sure does have the beiber hair.

Funny how the "cobblers kids have no shoes" - most photogs have trouble taking pics of their kids and hanging their own prints

Question for you Lisa: if budget were not a concern, who would you hire to take portraits of your family?

I would never do that. Both the 85L and 70-200L II are awesome lenses. The 200/2L is freaking expensive ... plus it's very heavy and uncomfortable to shoot with for any extended period of time. I would consider adding the 135L if you shoot mostly portraits outdoors.

I've tried LR4 CA removal and it did a nice job. It's worth a try.

I've tried LR3 CA removal and it was pathetic...maybe I should upgrade?

I WANT the 200L. Don't get me started on that lens. I'm trying to convince my husband that it isn't that expensive. haha

RE family pics, I love Mindy Harris of Pastel Photography, amongst many others. Go check her out. http://pastelphotography.com/

Lovely work as always Lisa. Do you use any form of light modifiers at all for any of these shots, i.e reflectors or are these all straight natural light only?

70-200/2.8L IS ver I: $1400
85L II: $2050
135L: $1000
Total: $4450

200/2L IS used $5300
85/1.8 new $390
Total: $5690

Difference in cost: $1240

If that 70-200 is a ver II, the difference in cost is $340. For $340 you gain the uniqueness of a 200/2 and have pretty much the same focal range coverage

Oh no, I'm a lens hoarder. I couldn't part with any of my lenses. It would have to join the family as is. We shall see. I do need a good write off this year.

No offense intended but you can shoot that pastel or dreamy look with any inexpensive consumer lens.

Was the bribe anything interesting that I might be able to use on my kids?

I need parenting and photography advice, but might be more easily able to put parenting advice into action.

Great images "of course" - I've admired your work in the past w/out commenting.

Hi Lisa,

I'm discovering this topic somewhat late, but I just received a 85L on loan and I'm eager to learn how you post processed these images. Specifically what application did you use (assuming LR3, that I read from your post) and how you handled sharpening.

Thank you!

Ralph

Was that really necessary? Sounds like someone has an issue with a bit of entrepreneurship.

ETA I have no problem helping people with specific issues RE editing or whatever, but no, I won't divulge my full editing process online in a free-for-all.
