BTW CPL would be problematic. How would you rotate the filter? Bifurcator wrote:
Good point on the CPL, I have no idea. I bought one for $8 and have used it on the Tamron 55BB 500mm mirror, and the UW Rokkor 18mm lenses. It worked OK. I didn't rotate anything and there's no mechanism to do so even if I wanted to - it's like a regular single part UV filter with no moving parts. So I'm at a loss <shrug>
Just wanted to follow up on this. I bought a CPL filter for my 300mm f2.8, and it comes complete with a custom drop in holder with adjustment wheel, so that's how you use CPL with the long teles.
Simon: Any interest in the TC? Let me know soon as I am on assignment for the next two weeks.
James: Great images with the EF 500mm...
Brian: The PL-C is the only way to go; I use the 48mm gelatin drop in at times also (greater ND filters & warming for effect). I need to get a 52mm for my EF long glass at this point.
I got to use an FD 600mm f4.5 briefly yesterday...not very good (PF/CA) as it has no UD or fluorite elements. My 800L spanked it pretty bad...

srhphoto: I had the Tokina 300mm f2.8 back during the 80's, along with the Tamron 300mm f2.8 (Model 60b IIRC). The Tokina shipped with a 7 element 2X T.C. as part of the package, their own brand. I do have one left over that has an FD to EOS conversion done, and if you want, I can send it over to you, no charge/no cost. It is just sitting in my dry cabinet, looking sad and for a good home . Seriously, if you want it, just send me a PM with your shipping address, and I will get it across the pond.
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you Edd, and thanks for the offer. If it's been converted to the EOS mount then it is no good to me without going out and buying another adaptor.
The front end (into lens mount) is FD, while the back-end (into body) is EOS, and milled to the correct flange distance, so no adapter is needed. I'm in Nevada until the end of next week; I can post a photo of it if you are still interested, so no worries either way.
Greetings from the 2012 Reno Air Races...it has been a blast. I left all of the MF glass home, shooting these with the EF 400mm f5.6L. I had no interest in hauling the 500mm f4L out here with the weight, wind, and dust. Less was best this time out...

Taken with a GH2 + Tokina 300mm f2.8 AT-X lens and 2XTC at the Sion Hall Falconry Centre in North Yorkshire. Will have to go back when the light is better, as it was tough going having to go up to ISO1250 to get a shutter speed of only 1/100s at that equivalent focal length.
