This morning, a young female Saimaa Ringed Seal appeared on the ice about 200 meters from our house, and I managed to get some shots of her. The Saimaa Ringed Seal is one of the most endangered species of seal (only about 300 individuals exist), and the entire population lives in Lake Saimaa, Finland. The seals are usually very easy-going, and not easily frightened by onlookers. This individual spent a few hours in the same spot, taking in the sun and the surroundings.
great shots of am apparently too-rare creature. thanks for bringing the plight of this animal to our attention. hopefully all efforts are being made to protect it.
Don and dorian, significant efforts are being made to protect and preserve the seal. Net fishing is restricted during early summer, and I believe there are some restrictions related to tourism and recreational lakeside homes as well. The population has been stable at 260-290 seals during the last ten years.
