p.2 #1 · Leica R 50 Summicron: recommendations

I remember that test -- thanks for the link. I have the Contax and am thinking about getting the Summicron to supplement it.

Regarding the bokeh, I found this quote from Sr.Cordeiro striking:

Probably, the Summilux 50 is one of the few lenses that have smoother bokeh at f/2 (of course there are the Sigma 50/1.4 and a few other AF lenses that may have smoother bokeh but I don't consider them competition in this case).

from those samples and the others i've seen, i'd say the rokkor MC PG 50/1.4 (and of course 58/1.2) would have smoother bokeh from f/2 on. the 50mm has the same pesky hexagon issue as the contax and cron though. gotta get the Z* version to have nice round oof highlights stopped down.

^OK, considering mounts with shorter registration distances, there are a few more options. The Rokkor 58/1.2 can also display some of the creamiest bokeh (as demonstrated by Cogitech) slightly stopped down (f/1.6-2.0), easily beating the Summicron and Planar I think. (Not sure how it does at longer focus distances though.)

bokeh is pretty much the same at a distance, but the lens is sharper.

it can be converted to nikon mount, but has the same issue there that it has on canon FF (mirror strike near infinity focus). i believe the 50/1.4 probably would not have the mirror strike, but the conversion is much more troublesome.

Kids, back to the original query. V.1 seems better suited for B&W? How's v.2? I have a bead on a late version v.2, 3-CAM and just CLA'd for US$450...reasonable price? Will it be as satisfactory for B&W as the earlier one?
