p.4 #1 · Which 50mm yields the most pleasing bokeh?
The bokeh is much smoother on Sigma 1.4 than Canon 1.4. I consider it better, but I own the 50L now because none of the others functioned adequately for me.

After reading and seeing all the good things about the SIgma 50 f/1.4 on the 5DIII, I ordered one yesterday and got it today.
Great bokeh and contrast, very much like an L. It also is fast focusing too. BUT the darn thing back focuses on objects <10 ft (3 m) and front focuses on objects >10 ft (3 m). I had to dial in +15 MA <10 ft and -10 MA >10 ft. If it was either way, that's OK and I could give it a chance, but this is unacceptable.
It goes back tomorrow. I am done with this lens and now I have narrowed it to the Zeiss 50mm manual focus or the Canon 50L.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the Sigma 50mm f/1.4. I too had problems with two of them bought from Amazon. I only purchased another ( the one I currently have ) in person from a brick and mortar shop. I think this is the only way to get a good one.

I have been pleased with my 50mm f/1.8 MkI bokeh too.
Bokeh is not entirely out of photographer's control, and there is more to it than the lens model alone.
Like any other photography element, bokeh needs to be visualised and controlled while making images.
p.4 #7 · Which 50mm yields the most pleasing bokeh?
I've never experienced the harsh bokeh of some shots here. Most of my 50mm shots are done indoors or in softer light though. I noticed the shot of the boy on the scooter was overexposed too. The ss is maxed at 1/800th in aperture priority. Don't know if that adds to the issue.

How does this look on 50L1.0
My 50 f/1.0 is slightly softer wide open than my 50 f/1.8 wide open, but in the above flower shot the bokeh at f/1.0 would have been more diffused, that's all.

Peter, you mean silkier, right please post the best 50mm bokeh please ....
I think the f/1.0 bokeh is pretty to-die-for good...but very subjectively so because it has extremely distinct highlight style that would make it "noisy" to some.
I own both the Zeiss lenses that have Canon mount. Neither of those has better bokeh or blur than the Canon 50L. The others can't you even mount on the camera
