I do not think the 85L is that jittery. I don't think I've even tried my 85L on the 5D III yet.
Here's a sample with the 85mm f/1.2L II on a 5D Mark II that I took a few months ago.
But shot with the same tree background as the 50. And then nearly every lens can have a jittery blur/bokeh from a certain distance. The 50 with the same background as your 85 shot would also look good

Did you know cell phone manufacturers actually ADD weight to cell phones for sale in the U.S. market because U.S. consumers deem heavier items as having greater value? Consumers in Europe, however, consider lighter products as having more value.
Personally, I wish there was a way to make the Leica 50mm f/0.95 work on a Canon camera. As far as I am concerned, it is the 50mm lens with "the most pleasing bokeh."
The popular Takamine guitars have always been light for decades until the last few years when North American model variants appeared with "value added" weight.

+1
Under the right conditions any lens can produce harsh bokeh, even a 200 f/2.

The Sigma has smoother bokeh and nice color compared to the 1.2 L. I used the Sigma on a 5D2 but sold it because i found something even more bokehlichious @ 50mm.

Yup. That's why I asked for direct side-by-side comparison shots. So far, I have yet to see any (particularly with busy trees in the background.)
Personally from the many threads comparing the two, it left me feeling that the Canon 50L is not 3x or 4x the price of the Sigma 50mm when in some areas the Sigma is actually better.

I like the 50mm f/1.0 more, but I also like the Zeiss MP. However I wished there was an EF 55mm f/1.2 Takumar available these days, the PK-MF version has stellar bokeh as you can see in a current 50mm thread in the alt forum.

My third shot was at f/1.2 actually.
I am amazed. Even at a subject distance of 15 feet, at 50mm f/1.2, the Depth of field is from 14.1-16 feet and the background should be nicely blurred out. Or so I thought
I'll have to experiment with my 50L now, and also look at my shots, perhaps I've never done f/1.2 or so with a subject at that distance.

tbh i can't believe this thread is still going.. i sold my Sigma 50 after 3 weeks because I just couldn't rely on it for event coverage or even simple studio shooting.. a few months later, had a chance to play with my colleague's "awesome, perfectly focusing" Sigma 50 for a few hours on two 1-series bodies - same story. sorry, I'd be the first to admit possible user error, but my issues with this lens had nothing to do with that. tried super hard to "enjoy" the lens, even tried to tell myself the warmer Sigma cast could be edited out.. but, ~10% randomly OOF images just isn't acceptable to me + this sums it up:

I wouldn't touch the sigma 50 with a 10' pole - even if it was someone else's 10' pole.
My 50L has been absolutely flawless in the four years I've used it. No fuss, no inconsistency, no front focus, no back focus. Perfect on all of my bodies. That alone is worth the price premium over the Sigma.
I think the f/1.0 bokeh is pretty to-die-for good...but very subjectively so because it has extremely distinct highlight style that would make it "noisy" to some.

a little off topic, but is the sigma 1.4 better than the canon 1.4?
I was thinking of stepping up from my 1.8 mk I but not sure if should bother and if so which one to get. The L is out for cost reasons for now unless I start shooting @50mm a lot more often.
