p.1 #1 · 5D3 Night Photography

Anyone had a chance to use a 5D3 for night photography? I would love to know if the 5D3 sensor is noticeably better than the 5D2's was in real low light and possibly high ISO. Thank you.

Night photography is amazing! Especially the AF. Many times I was very surprised that the 5d3 is able to lock on focus- even at very dark scenes.

JPEGs are definitely awesome. The NR does a great job.

Beware of very high ISOs. I think it is the characteristic of the camera, but at ISO 16k+ you will see some op-amp glow (red/pinkish glow) at the corner of the frames. But this can be handled through cropping. This is not to scare anyone- it is just high ISOs -> large amplification -> weird stuff happens

@David - one of my workshop students did a lot of long exposure shooting with the 5D II and 5D III last week. I'm going to ask him for some test files because I'm also curious if there's an improvement.

I took it out for some night photography to see how it performed in low light cityscapes. Most of these images were captured at ISO 200-400, f16, 15-30 second exposures, tripod and cable release. The focus was quick and accurate.

The only way to know the answer to the original poster's question, is to shoot the 5DII and 5DIII side-by-side and compare the results.

Not really I can't point at about 4000 images I just took over 4 days where the 5dmk2 would of been unable to get shots due to lack of AF fidelity and frame rate..the AF on the mk3 allows stuff you simply cannot get with the more basic body.
Tripod work I'd expect little difference but anything with action the mk2 will struggle to even get the shot..

GAry... nice images of the Stone Arch Bridge. I love all 3... my only nit is the overhead wires.

I hate the overhead wires too! It truly ruins a great view of Downtown Minneapolis. I wish it were easier to Photoshop out of the image! Thanks!

Very basic editing ISO6400..ie no selective masking of the sky just basic processing..photo is heavily cropped original aircraft is around 60% of full frame.

ISO 8000...cropped to around 80% original size. Aircraft are a great test for a camera..fine details lots of shadows, and hi contrast in the lit sections of fuselage are a real test and you are forced to shoot low shutter speed in almost zero ambient light.
Also i havnt had time to work on a good workflow for the Mk3 hi ISO stuff so would image far better results will come as that happens.
