MA is used for adjustment of the auto-focus system, so your assumption is correct.

If you want to use focus assist points with your ZE lenses, then yes your camera may need MA adjustment with the lens.

Exactly right. It matters.

MA would not be required in live view for any lens. Even if you had an AF lens and used the contrast detect AF in live view.

I use the Zeiss 35/1,4 and many other Zeiss ZE lenses on 3 different Canon bodies without any MA adjustment

I haven't yet really spent much time checking calibration of focus assist on my ZE lenses with my 5D Mark III. It was pretty much spot on for my 5D II though. So far the Canon AF glass I've used on the 5D III have been perfect. Hopefully that will carry over.

Ian, that's interesting about the contrast detect AF in live view not needing focus adjusting. Is that because it is using a different AF system than the what the focus adjust uses? I would think that has to be it.

Good point. Hadn't considered that. Do Canon cams allow you to register MFA on non-Canon lenses? Guess i never tried.

There was a recent thread on the alt forum where someone MA'd a 35/1.4 to a 5D3 for test shooting. Similarly I can register and MA my chipped OM50 on my 5D2 (though I have not bothered to MA it since I use the S screen to focus with it).

The non Canon lenses have to be chipped so that the Canon body can recognize the lens focal length. For example all Zeiss ZE lenses register the proper lens focal length in the EXIF and all can use focus confirm. Micro Adjust is available to calibrate non Canon lenses using focus confirm.
