p.2 #1 · Lens suggestions for 5dII on maui

One consideration might be a 24-105. Like I do, many 5D users have it on their camera most of the time for landscapes and for a single lens vacation lens. I used a Contax 35-70 for Maui because I didnt have my 24-105 yet. And Maui just happens to be an ultra wide paradise. It's feels strange for me to use and recommend these two lenses. They're weaknesses are well documented, but their versatility trumps the pure IQ ability. My 21, 28 and 35-70 have better IQ, but get left home more and more for the convenience of the Canons.

In 2 trips to kauai the 24-105 was used far more than the 17-40 and that was on a 1.3 crop. I would keep it simple. If I were to go back I would take my 24-70 and 70-300 L and leave the rest at home.

A couple posters have shared their Kauai experience, but I think that their are some differences between Kauai and Maui. Some of the best views in Kauai are on long hikes where an ultra-wide is necessary, but if you don't do those then a 24-105 makes sense, especially for shots from a heli (more distance to landscape features such as waterfalls). In Maui, especially on the Road to Hana, you,re very restricted in the space around landscape features necessiting the use of an ultra-wide. You can't simply back up or choose another spot for a better angle because you'll fall off a cliff or something willobsure your view. I was at 17mm for much of trip. YMMV

If you are trying to limit it, the 35L and 24-105 would be my choice. No whales at this time of the year, which would be my main reason for a long lens. Except for Hana, wide isn't too needed. Very different than Kauai. For me, I'm usually all in with lenses, my photography is a big focus when I travel anywhere, why limit yourself?

Another place to go is the Botanical Gardens, there are three on Maue. The one I went to is at the base of Haleakala, Enchanting Gardens. If you go to the crater for the sunrise, bring a picnic and head to the gardens for lunch. Very easy hiking.

Here are some shots from the garden: http://smu.gs/HLKe65

The crater is a great place to try out HDR and/or graduated neutral density filters, these are the first HDR's I ever did: http://smu.gs/HLKn9K

Luaus are also good opportunities: http://smu.gs/HLKzpy
