Hi All. Just recently picked up a 5dII for my trip to maui... I have been shooting landscapes with my 7D and 17-55IS combo... Looking to pick up a couple lens for my trip to maui to do some landscape and waterfall shooting. Leaning toward the 35L for some reason, only thing im concerned about is it wont be wide enough? Just looking for some overall suggestions on good lens to pair up with the 5DII for this trip! I dont think I would be able to afford both a 24L and a 35L at the time but would like to have a lens that I can use for walk around as well there. Thanks for your input!
I'd go with the 16-35 2.8L if your looking to focus on landscapes and waterfalls - definitely do the Hana Hwy Drive and Haleakala sunrise. Good luck shooting - Maui is beautiful!
I take my 35L everywhere as my primary walk-around lens, but otherwise I stayed a bit on the wide end. Most of the images were with my wide-angle (16-35), although I did have some >70mm. I had the advantage of having my whole kit there, but I definitely wouldn't only take the 35. The 35 + a zoom on the other hand (like the aforementioned 24-105, perhaps) would be nice. I probably wouldn't lug along your 70-200.
I picked up the Rokinon just for this trip. It's not great at 2.8 SOOC, but it sharpens up well. It's pretty awesome at f/8 though, and I do mean awesome. I'll be using it mostly at f/8 and f/2.8 or 3.2 for some shots of the Milky Way.
I tried renting the 2x TC, but it didn't work out and ended up renting the 400 instead. I think it'll be worth it for surfers, birds, whales, and whatever else I want to spy at from a distance, hahahaha. I'm sure I'll find it use for it for landscapes too.

You'll have 35mm covered in your 17-40. If you're worried about landscapes in low light, you might go after the 24L.
I have the 17-40L and like it a lot for landscapes, but have been thinking about adding 35L for low light or closeup w/ bokeh shots as I tend to love those perspectives.
Guess it depends on what you want to do. I will say that while I'm on vacation the 17-40 rarely comes off.

I would use the 5D/17-40 and 7D/70-200 for landscapes - carry both with you at all times if you can. For walkaround and "nightscapes" I'd use the 5D/35L @ 1.4-2.2
Don't be scared to explore....most of Maui's best is off the beaten path. The island is small so you don't have to worry about getting lost down some small dirt road. Rent a 4X4 and get off the asphalt Koki beach in Hana is a nice little beach for photography. There are also some nice black sand beaches along the way but you must find them first If you have time get over to Lanai too.
One suggestion:
A tour book might estimate the Road to Hana drive, but I would account for a lot more time. As artsupreme suggested, you don't want to miss all the little spots to stop and explore. Nearly every bay is picturesque and waterfalls seem to be around every corner.

Fantastic shots you got there! Thank you for the input on the lens choices... Im leaning towards a 35L and a 17-40L and investing in some better filters
In 2 trips to kauai the 24-105 was used far more than the 17-40 and that was on a 1.3 crop. I would keep it simple. If I were to go back I would take my 24-70 and 70-300 L and leave the rest at home.
