p.1 #1 · 57 Custom Controls and no Mirror Lockup

The new 5D3 has 57 button control options to select, but not one for ML.

Other than to frustrate photographers, is there some reason why Canon will not assign one button custom control for mirror lock up?

Can someone come up with a software patch that will do this.....please

I always assign mirror lock up to one of the mode dial C spots. Works a treat.

Yes, until you decide to temporarily change a setting (such as ISO, or aperture while in Av mode) and the camera goes to auto power off. After you wake it up, it will return to the dial C settings. This is the reason I cannot use the Dial C1, C2 and C3. There's always some settings that I wish to change temporarily and finding the camera set it back to the saved settings drives me crazy.

For the record, this is using my 40D. Maybe Canon fixed this in the 5DII or 5DIII. If so, please let me know.

In general, for most of the situations in which you might use MLU, live view turns out to be a better option. For example, if you are working from the tripod, the right live view option will produce the least vibration-caused blur of any option including live view.

The only real downside to live view is that it uses battery power more quickly.

Just place it on the custom menu. Simple, and works great.

MLU became obsolete with the advent of LiveView.

Yes, MLU is obsoleted by Live View and electronic 1st curtain (induces zero vibration). Electronic 1st curtain in LV is sorely missed on the 1DmkIV, but will be available on the 1DX.

Liveview is superior to MLU from what I understand anyway. It makes use of the electronic first curtain shutter and provides superior results, although it make need pixel peeping to see this and only under certain situations.

MLU is obsolete! LIve View Silent Shooting has no 2 sec delay requirement if you use a remote and has less vibration than MLU. MLU still has to open the shutter to initiate exposure whereas LV SS has electronic first curtain and absolutely no vibration at all.
I have proven this here:

I didn't give a rat's arse about LV until I realized it was just a fancy MLU button, so that's what I use it for. At first I used the shortcut menu but LV is even faster. Back in the day, I recall my Elan 7E had MLU when I invoked the 2 second delay with the RC-1 remote. That method was also faster than using a dad burn menu. However, I really don't want a dedicated MLU button--LV is fine--and I'm guessing 99% of DSLR shooters feel the same way. It all EOS had one, this forum would be flooded with "I can't see anything through my VF" posts.
