Im coonfused between these two for a backup point and shoot. The g12 is built like a tank but the s95 has the f 2.0 lens. What would you guys do? I wanted something to take on my vacation besides my 5d2, so I dont have to be chained to my beach chair.
For a backup point-and-shoot I would suggest something with *extra* capabilities, for example a waterproof camera. I can attest that it's amazingly useful on a beach :-)
I'd go S95 simply because of its size. I've played with both (and own the S95) and find the S95 much more portable while offering the same quality as the G12. Now if we're talking G1X vs. S95, the G1X has quite a bit more to offer than either of these cameras performance-wise.
For family shots and travel back-up, I have the G10, and my wife has the S95. I prefer the chunkier G-series, but I'm terribly impressed by the convenience and picture quality of the S95. I'd say to get the G12 if you like the solid construction and easy to adjust controls. If you just want a P&S auto, then get the S95 (or S100).
I agree, for more money, the G1X looks outstanding if close-up doesn't interest you. The G10-12 are pretty awesome in macro mode (maybe the G9 as well).
I definetly did not want to spend $800+ on a back up, so probably the g12 ($409 new locally here) would do the trick. But that f2.0 of the s95 is still tempting..
I bought the s95 last year for this same reason. Very good picture quality and sliding and riding in my jeans front pocket trumps any additional features in a camera that doesn't fit there. I will always have this with me when I want it, which will ensure that I get a picture which might not otherwise happen if carrying wasn't so easy.
I am generally unimpressed by the IQ of P&Ses. If I want just a snapshot of something cute/interesting, well, my phone's camera is capable enough. Otherwise if I were to carry an additional chunk of hardware, it better do something that my other hardware cannot do -- e.g., to repeat myself, be waterproof.

Thats what I was thinking with these, to get an underwater case too so I can use it while I go scuba
I don't think a normal waterproof camera will cut it for scuba… some are waterproof up to 40' but that's instetaneous pressure. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking that below 20'…
i have both the s95 and g12 and both are really great cameras. the s95 as robert stated is small and a go anywhere camera. the g12 is a bit larger and heavier and kinda like a mini SLR w/ kit lens. you can also put an external flash on it. that makes it a huge plus for me.
if you are just looking for a vacation camera that is easy on the go, the s95 is really great.

+1
I have a G12; I bought my wife an S95 for Christmas. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
I hate being forced to use the screen to take pictures; I just like using a viewfinder, so the G12 won out for me. But the S95 is so much easier to stick in a pocket, I'm considering trying to pick one up used for, e.g., when I'm skiing and the G12 is just too big.
