The display size of the top lcd looks very similar in size to the top lcd on the 1dx, but the configuration of the lcd layout is different. I'm wondering if they are the same with different firmware to configure a separate look but electronically being the same lcd. Could the light leak cross between models?

Well, if the construction plans called for the use of duct tape in that way (and it would work - it IS duct tape and not gaffer tape after all) then this would not be a design flaw.
On the other hand, I don't think Canon designed the 5DIII to have the tape in place to prevent this light leak and somehow just forgot to put the tape in. So, the lack of the tape would be a design flaw in the 5DIII. If they did just forget to put in the tape then it is a manufacturing flaw.
