Is there such a thing as a Universal L-bracket from ProMediaGear? They have a generic landscape plate but I didn't a universal L-bracket on their site.
^^ No they don't have one but an L bracket will be out soon at PMG for a good price, $99 I think. I am going to check it out. It's not something I leave on the camera anyway.

Seriously? How can RRS or Kirk or anyone else do something about the camera manufacturer changing the width of the body, the port / connector layout (important for the cable release cutout), etc.? When the car manufacturer changes the bolt pattern or the hub diameter from one model to the next, are you also mad at the aftermarket wheel manufacturer since your fancy wheels no longer fit?

THat is the whole reason we spend the big bucks on these plates, as they are supposed to be custom fit to each camera body. That is why this newest plate from RRS has got people upset.
I agree with Stan. It is not the plate/bracket manufacturer's call in that respect. Don't get me wrong they love changes in the body design of new cameras. They can design and manufacture new brackets and cash in on the change .
While a universal plate will work great for various cameras and that's the route I have taken but I would prefer a custom fit design for my L-bracket. Of course, I would expect a perfect fit of that on my camera body though.

I am with you on that. I will wait and see what the RRS L-bracket looks like and either return it, or sell it locally. I really like the Kirk design, especially the potential to move the plate laterally to accommodate a tether cable.
Such a shame. I was looking forward to placing my order with RRS for the L-bracket but will explore other manufacturers due to the poor design I'm seeing here of the standard bracket.
I'm rather curious about the Promedia brackets. I see a body only bracket on their site. Is there a grip version coming as well?
I've always used RRS brackets on my stuff, but since I don't have my 5D3 (hopefully soon) and even further still, no grip for it... the bracket is the last component I'm getting. So, I'm hoping that this crap will be worked out by then
I am really glad I bought a few generic plates from Acratech, so I'll at least have some way of connecting the new body to the tripod once it comes in.

That's a nice thing about universal plate is it'll fit on both grip and non-grip body. I' just bought a PMG plate as well because I'll add a grip later and don't want to buy another plate.

Ah, no.. I'm looking for an L bracket, not just a plate. I have generic plates already from Acratech that work just great. That will hold me over until my grip and L gets here... but I was just curious if they have a L bracket, as I'm out to lunch on the RRS(can't believe I just typed that) and never really liked the Kirks.
I canceled my RRS L plate order by phone today. They were very nice I explained that I had concerns about the Rev. A plate so I was going to order a Kirk L Bracket.
He said he understood and then volunteered that the Kirk products would work with all of the RRS clamps and brackets.
So I am confident I will have no problems and I will continue to do business with RRS in the future.
On a side note the Kirk people were equally nice and helpful and sent me an email that my plate will ship middle of next week.
I do have to tell you guys that even the Rev 0 L-plate fits almost perfectly from what I can tell. I realize the standard plate is off but I really don't see much issue with the L-plate. I will take pics and compare as soon as my Rev A gets here (I still have the Rev 0). Currently tracking has it in Vancouver customs and with my recent order from Feisol that took over a week to clear!! Usually only takes one or two days to clear customs for past RRS orders.

Ah sorry, no I want an L bracket for a grip... That's what I meant.
I was talking to a customer service rep. so he was aware of the issue and said the changes made were minor but he he felt sure it would not be a problem.
He was clear he was not a design eng. He offered to conect me to one but I passed.
I went with the Kirk plate because I like a radius better than the flat contact area and it looks more like my RRS L bracket on my 1dmk2 it works really right (sorry couldn't pass it up) and I never take it off. I use their flash bracket also.
I was able to make my old RRS 5D L-bracket fit my 5D Mark III by slightly elongating the screw hole with a small round file. I only had to lengthen it by about half the diameter of the screw and it fits just about perfectly.
