Oh well - When my Rev A plate come in I will be sending it back.

I just ordered a Kirk Plate. If you notice on the Kirk design they recess the location of the "gasket" RRS is so worried about and curve the plate to fit the camera on the front and back.

RRS has gone cheap and functional, with the result they produce a few concentrated pressure points. I am sure it will work and equally sure those few pressure points will wear on the camera over time.

Too bad. RRS was a good company in the day.

While I agree with you on point #2, I don't on point #1. A plate that is off square by several degrees isn't even functional IMO.

Just ordered the Kirk as well. I also noticed the recess for the gasket...amazing that through a feat of engineering, they were able to deliver nice, non-marring rounded contact points.

I just don't get how they could screw up a "revision" so badly.

I said it would work - I didn't say it would work well

I've already emailed RRS about this matter and pointed them to this forum for 'user input'. Not too sure if there will be a Rev B but from everyone's responses, I can assume no one is really happy at this point about Rev A. RRS, if you're reading this, please fix this asap with Rev B and get it right this time.

Does anyone know if the Kiirk plates (L-bracket specifically) would be compatible with my RRS quick release clamp? RRS indicates they are only compatible with RRS or Wimberly.

NOTE: Choose a Lever Release clamp ONLY if you have quick release plates from Really Right Stuff or Wimberley. Lever Release clamp are not user-adjustable, and different manufacturers may follow different standards when producing Arca-Swiss compatible plates. Specifically, our Lever Release clamps do not work with plates from Markins, AcraTech, Arca-Swiss, and some Kirk plates–the dovetails are too shallow. Choose a screw-knob clamp if you have plates OTHER than those from RRS or Wimberley.

I had a mixed of Kirk, Wimberley and RRS plates/brackets and recently I added a PMG plate to the mix and never had any issues using them on my RRS lever clamps. Older Acratech plates, on the other hand, are indeed a little loose on them, that's true. I am not sure whether Acratech made any adjustment in their plates/brackets in the last few years.

Interesting. I know the screw type clamps have more tolerance for manufacturer differences but the lever type has strict tolerances, hence the note by RRS.

What model of RRS lever clamp do you have and how old is it? I have the "B2 LR II: 60mm LR clamp with dual mount".

I have 3 RRS lever B2 LR II clamps , one on my tripod on a Markins ballhead, one on the monopod in combo with RRS monopod head and one on the BushHawk. Their age varies from several years to the most recent one of about 2 years ago or so. Again, in my case, all plates I have, except for the Acratech ones, work fine and YMMV. I just want to make sure of that.

Again, RRS must have referred to the Acratech plates when they came up with that statement.

Kirk Photo just called and said they are out of stock on the 5D3 body plates and will have them on Monday. Nice folks too like RRS.

AGeoJO, Good to know. I will wait and see what my L-bracket looks like but may very well go the Kirk route. I wish mine had not shipped yet, otherwise I would cancel the order and just go Kirk instead. Being in Canada, I will be dinged taxes, duties and handling just to get it at the door, not to mention the return to RRS.

Epic Fail IMO.

And maybe their financial statement

Interesting they included Wimberly in the equation though. I have a generic Wimberly (P5?) plate that works fine on the RRS clamp.

Has anyone seen the new Rev A L-plate yet? I still have the original on my 5D3 and actually don't see much issue with it. I realize the single plate is different somehow. I only own a single plate for my 7D but never use it so have not bought them for my 5D2 or 5D3. I just looked at the 7D and it is nicely curved and all one piece. What is up with this new plate. Looks terrible IMHO.

I didn't read thru all the posts but will the Kirk plate fit the RRS ball heads?

Go back a page and read from here: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1103460/6#10594674
It specifically addressed this issue. Apparently the RRS clamps should work fine with the Kirk plates.

I have 1 LR and 1 screw type for my B55Pros but all I use is RRS plates but not happy with the controversy going on here so far.
Thanks again James!

I use a RRS B2 LLR II lever clamp on my primary tripod and it has worked with any plate I've used. RRS and Kirk L-plates, lens plates, and camera plates, Markins plates, Wimberley plates, cheap Chinese generic plates, etc. I've never used an Acratech plate, so I guess that's the brand to avoid.

Another validation - good to know.

I bought a 5D1 and the RRS L plate. It worked fine, but when I bought a 5D2, it didn't fit! I had to sell the 5D1 plate at a considerable loss (since 5D2 then were in demand, and 5D1 wasn't). I now have two 5D2 with two 5D2 L plates. If I upgrade to the 5DIII, guess what, these 5d2 plates don't fit! I will get to sell these two 5D2 L plates at a loss.

I'm getting tired of this intentional design sh*t from RRS, or Kirk. I'm going to buy a universal plate from Promedia. I've already bought my last plate from RRS!
