German camera (M8), german watch Apparently I am a sucker for German engineering ... And ofc the car should be German too. I don't own one myself yet, but my parents are driving cars from two different Stuttgart brands.
Here's my only watch, cleaned up and all for function. Zero variance time accuracy, automatically set every night to radio signal. Solar powered and never needs batteries. Altimeter has resolution of 20 feet and works best when calibrated to a known altitude. Waterproof enough, the usual timing functions, barometer, and less than $100. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7047/7071087343_e7007a1671_c.jpg
I'm certainly not a watch photographer, and I don't have any sort of light tent setup. I just grabbed my two old watches this morning (I don't tend to wear a watch anymore, though I have a newer watch that still works.) Both of these need the battery replaced. The Bulova I haven't worn in a while, as I've gotten a bit heavier since I got it, and it's a little tight. I'm not sure where the links that I removed when I got it are, or I'd have one put back in.
The Swiss Army watch I got as a high school graduation present 16 years ago, and has seen a LOT of use. the band that is on it now is, I believe, the third band I've had for it. I didn't clean either of these, but it works for the Swiss Army shot, as the thing is pretty beat up from such heavy use. Great watch, though.
Both of these are with my Panny GX1 and Leica 45/2.8 macro, with simple bounced flash.
Now you've got me interested in watch photography. Need to get a polarizer for my macro lens.
Anyway, this is my current timepiece. I don't wear it that much as it's a little too large for my taste (it was a gift), and I can't wear a watch while at work or my wrist hurts from sitting at the computer for too long.
Shot with GX1 and Leica 45/2.8 Macro. Lighting via the GX1 pop up flash, tilted and bounced against a nearby wall.

Luxury wrist watches arent about telling time..
what are they about? appreciating fine engineering/construction, jewelry, status symbols? serious question - a few of my friends are very into them too, but i've never really been able to get any kind of explanation of the attraction from them.
All of those and including the history of various pieces. Its also about that intangible emotional factor as well.
I mean as a tool for telling time humanity has invented the solar powered atomic radio wrist watch that is very compact, ever lasting, has a compass, a barometer, an altimeter, and will survive all situations that your body can't.
These are all Veblen goods whose purchase prices make absolutely no sense unless you love it.
Some people spend $800 for a fine bottle of wine for a meal while I'm very happy with just a $30 bottle. I'll never understand that but my appreciation of fine watches has made me not so easily dismiss other people's taste as foolish and wasteful.
My watch collector friends are astounded I paid $1100 for a camera without even a lens attached! Their Casio point and shoots which they've been told by a Best Buy salesman takes 18 megaPixel shots is surely enough and fits in their front pocket.

fair enough. i don't know anybody outside of this forum with any interest in manual focus lenses and my wife doesn't see how real speakers are better than computer speakers let alone how some speakers are better than others. i probably just don't get luxury watches because i never liked watches whether they were crap, good, or exotic.
