p.1 #1 · Why is there more Canon gear in Sell forum?
I have been keeping a close watch on the Buy and sell forum for few stuff that I want to buy. I feel that there is more Canon stuff sold in that forum than Nikon. Why is that?
Probable explanations I could think of are:
- People sell Canon and shift to Nikon.
- People using Canon upgrade their gear more often and that's why sells theirs on the marketplace.
- More people use Canon and so more gear in the marketplace.
- Nikon gears are more stable and people tend to keep it for longer time and that's why less sale in marketplace.
- People go for "new" when it comes to Nikon and "used" when it comes to Canon.
- Canon has more re-sale value than Nikon.
What you think of the reason why more Canon gear is sold in our buy and sell forum than Nikon gear

The ratio between Canon and Nikon users (for all type of cameras and not only DSLRs) is approximately 2:1. I read it somewhere but couldn't remember where and I couldn't provide any link either. So, I may be off a little but you got the picture. Plus, Nikon, being a smaller company and more affected by the earthquake and tsunami by the mere coincidence of plant location, is producing less units. You can draw your own conclusion from there.

I think all of the above is true. But the truest parts would seem to be
1) There's more Canon gear available (while the Canon-Nikon gap has certainly closed, it was larger a few years ago, hence more gear available).
1a) Again, it's not as much of a difference now, but go back a few years and Canon shooters had a lot more lens choices. There were 4 different 70-200mm Canons and one Nikon, for example.
2) Probably because of 1a and maybe personality, Canon shooters tend to change gear a lot more frequently, in my opinion.
But I really think your point about Nikon shooters going for new and Canon going for used is very valid.
It's not just the buy and sell forum here. My business sells a lot of used equipment. About 65% is Canon and 35% Nikon but if you looked on our sale page at any given time there's twice as much Nikon for sale. Canon stuff tends to sell in a few days, Nikon stuff often takes a few weeks and sells at a lower % of new price. I would guess warranty differences probably have a lot to do with that. Also the fact that if you buy Nikon used and it turns out to be gray market it's very difficult to get fixed.

When I was shooting Canon a year ago there were SO many more good deals used on CL locally. Switched to Nikon and nobody lets this stuff go for cheap and even then it's just plain hard to find high end Nikon gear. If I had to make a judgement based on that I'd say the Nikon shooters hold on to their stuff longer, don't need the cash so much when selling, and make fewer impulse buys that they're looking to dump a short while later...

I usually sift through the Toronto craigs list and have noticed lately a lot more Canon lens and entire kits up for sale, some have even noted that they are switching to Nikon. I would guess that a lot of the sale items are from people making the switch. Here in Toronto you can basically walk into any camera store and purchase a 5d mk3, where as when the mk2 was realesed you couldn't find one for a while. I am thinking a lot of poeople are making the switch becuase the extra mp work for them and don't like the 500 dollar premium for a lesser camera. I am hoping the price comes down to nikons level so I can pick up a mk3 and not feel bad about canon abusing me with the price. I was just about to pull the trigger myself on a Nikon package but the large mp and file size kept me away as a wedding shooter I canot deal with that much data.

Simple answer.
The difference is much less than it was say five years ago though. The ratio of Nikon to Canon users has increased alot over the years and the flow of used Nikon gear is much more on here than what it was when I switched to Nikon.

Probably more Canon users...but there's been huge momentum for many Canonites to shift to the D800/E as well. That may of course change if Canon ever releases a high MP body later this year.

No kidding... it always makes me laugh when I read posts like that.
I have over 10 TB's of drives and that is not the issue, drives are cheap. Taking 1500 Raws at a wedding then loading them and working on them in lightroom and photos shop is what bothers me. I get frustrated enough with 21 mp. 36 mp is great for lots of types of photography but doesn't work for me, tripling my file size is totally out of the question.

Fred shoots Canon.
Used to be 10 : 1 (Canon/Nikon) here, but I'd venture to say it's closer to 3 : 1 currently.
This is great news for the 'monkey. Switched sides ~3 years ago and buy 90% of my gear
used...on our B&S. Is this a great place or what?!

I thought that you could select 24 mp in FF on the D 800 which would not be that much larger than the 21mp.

Yes, there are a number of file size options, making the D800 a win win for me.
Is that not misleading, to say the least? You cannot get a FF 24MP with the D800. Again, the keyword is FF here. Correct me if I am wrong then, please.
