I posted after reading D800 "expert reviews" resulting from literally few hrs. of playing with a new and very complex technology and "opinions" of many who only heard about the camera. Hence the title of my post and questions.
Most people do not sell to agencies, hang exhibitions and majority don't even own an inkjet sprinkler to produce a print (ordering prints at Costco is not the same). Majority don't even have quality calibrated monitors or colour space aware browsers to view the "irrefutable evidence" of a product superiority based on 500 pixel image. Yet it allows them to declare which product is either "trashing", "burying" or at least "not coming even close" to the other : -). The main discussion are limited to sharpness and more recently DR based on some published numbers.
Similar nonsense regards the lens quality quarrels where some "proud owners" (gotta love the expression - "a proud owner"), claim "superior contrast", "3D look" produced by a certain brands or at least claim a "unique rendering".
All this is taking place as if the latest product was the last and the best forever : -)
Is this infantilism, immaturity or power of advertising?
It looks that sheeple will believe any BS on stilts if it comes to them from the media and is frequently parroted by others. The unfortunate truth is that one can buy tools, but not talent and skills....Show more →
Mate, couldn't agree with you more.
This pi$$ing contests have been going on for as long as I have been in the business which is nearing 30 years now but since the advent of internet forums, it's just got plain bloody stupid.
I remember being at the biggest awards presentation in the country and having dinner with a few of the country's top shooters before hand. They were sitting there in heated debate over whether "Blad or Rollei lenses were superior. After listening for too long, I asked a mate, aren't they the exact same lens made by the same company with a different mount. He burst into laughter as did a few other s confirming my question was on the money.
The thing that made this even more stupid was these guys put crap on the bronica's and Mamiya gear most of the more humble shooters were using as being highly inferior rubbish. AS I directly pointed out, these guys arguing this put a softar filter or other piece of $20 plastic that destroyed all the qualities of the lens they were arguing about for about 85% of their work!!
Since net forums came along, the pi$$ing contests and ego trips are totally laughable.
You have to sell your previous model camera because the latest one that you have to pre-order so you can have it the very day it is released has a whoppling 2 MP more than the old one.
The old one of course is 12-18 months old a best, working fine and was the be all and end all of camera development and photography when you paid through the nose to get that one ASAP instead of waiting 6 months till the price dropped a grand.
I laugh my butt off when I read forums and these shooters who have been in the game all of 2 years ranting on about how only prime lenses could possibly yeild an acceptable image quality for wedding work and of course to cover every angle you have to take 9 of them with you and use them all on any job.
How the hell they manage to get any pics at all with all the lens swapping defies my 30 years of shooting weddings. Back in the film days, we were shooting pics that are still seen as awesome and if we had 3 lenses for our MF cameras, we'd be lucky to ever use them all on a singe job.
The clients were still happy as, the images are still brilliant today, so what is the need for all this carry on and rit about needing so many primes??
I bought a canon 600D last year for specific work I was doing which was just corporate events shooting on green screen. I love the little thing and its so capable for 90% of the work I do I don't need to spend more on a cam that will deliver an end product that will be no more impressive to the clients or enthuse them to buy more.
Of course the know it all forumites, many who do nothing more than play tiddly winks on the weekends will say you can't possibly shoot a decent pic on amateur crap like that and laugh even though it leaves the camera they HAD to have that cost a fortune just 5 years ago.
OTOH, My accountant says great move on not spending more than you have to and over capitalizing
and point out how much more profitable the business is becoming.
I also love how these equipment junkies that HAVE to have all these toys that they can't live without often have been doing the exact same work for years.
What I wonder is, if they can't live without their latest substitute for a Penis extension, how the hell did they survive without their electronic and glass crutch 5 years ago or even last month before they had it and were doing the self same work
If you genuinely have a need and the features of a new cam solve a problem for you, by all means get the gear that will make your life easier. If what you have is good enough for the work you do rather than something you have never contemplated before, put it back in your pants and be a photographer not a button pusher ,

Most of the good pro photographers I have met talk business when they talk shop and not gear while people attending workshops and forums talk about gear not what they do with it.

A simple answer from a 10mp/film shooter...the 38mp sensor image and it's massive cropping ability, being able to tightly crop and still produce a killer 13 x 19 or smaller print.

I think you are so right, likewise is Kurtz
Going from the current crop of camera's in order to get
major improvements in Image Quality, there is only MFDB,
it's probably out of reach for most of us.
It isn't in the quantity of pixels we need, it's bigger and better pixels
Just my $.02

Maybe the answer for someone who has a limited focal length but you know it's a real bad substitute.
Buy a longer lens instead, it's money better spend IMHO

When I read about the 36Mp cam I thought it's greatest asset would be in never having t change lenses again. Shoot everything with a 17mm and crop as required.
As for anything else, I have an 18 Mp cam now and turn it down to 8 for the majority of work I do to make image transfer and processing faster and leave more room on my servers.

I should have never left shooting film because of the great DR. Now, I am scared to use it because I like chimping to be sure that I got the shot right. I use the Nikon D300 bodies, shoot in RAW and I can fill a 500GB hard drive in six months. As a people photographer, there is no reason for me to upgrade to more megapixels. The constant release of new cameras is getting annoying to me because the megapixel wars are accelerating as well as adding video features which I also don't need.
To me, the lens is so important and I would put my money on lenses. Primes? Oh yes. I don't need a dozen prime lenses. I can change out a lens fast enough at a wedding using a Tamrac lens pouch or two attached to my belt.
