p.1 #1 · Shoot BOTH Nikon and Canon?

Do any of you shoot both Nikon and Canon systems? This may sound crazy, but I like to shoot 3 types ...

1) Landscapes, i.e when traveling, Yosemite, the coast, etc.
2) My daughter - 6 years old and activities, friends, etc.
3) Dog -- pretty fast, Australian Shepherd / Lab mix. Kid's tennis also.

Part of me thinks the best kit would be ...

Nikon D800, 14-24, 24-70

Canon 1D IV (or 5DIII), 24-70, 70-200 II, 100-400

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I was thinking of getting a canon for longer stuff, but their camera bodies look so damn ugly & toy like.

I liked my friend's 5D and considered if I wanted to go that route when Nikon didn't off FX in a relatively affordable body, but in the end I didn't want to be supporting two different formats that we're incompatible with each other and operated differently. The D700 came out and gave me what I wanted, so it didn't matter.

Everyone is different as are the cameras of today, but in my case I don't think I would want to do it.

some people shoot both systems and i imagine more will with the d800 being a great landscape body.

i shoot a d700 with 14-24 and 24-70 and i shoot canon (sports) 200mm and over.

sounds like a great set up.

Nikon wide, Canon long. That was due to the Nikon 14-24mm lens on the wide end and Canon availability and pricing of telephotos on the long end, although the pricing has since reversed

p.1 #7 · Shoot BOTH Nikon and Canon?

Um-m-m... I did manage to shoot with both systems and to say you the truth, couldn't make for myself a solid choice, even for now, after more than two years without Canon.

Take these statements with huge grain of salt:

— Canon ergonomics are better for my taste. I am still feel badly for not having a dedicated <*> spot metering button in Nikon system. Just can't tell you how it is helpful. I'm tall guy with huge hands, so lower-end bodies are very inconvenient, especially Nikon ones. I tried D40, D3100, D5000 (current camera) — all of them were awful at holding and operating. OTOH, D3 feels awesome, its handgrip is very comfortable for me. Canon 5D classic has uncomfortable grip, 350D was really awful, 3000n and 300 (both film models) leaved much to be desired, but you know what? The oldest consumer digital model 300D layed in my hand brilliantly! It was a sheer surprise when I took it. EOS 1v is simply the best.

— Thanks to short flange distance, you can mount anything you wish to your Canon. Well, almost. I had mirror clearance issues at some distance settings with Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar on all my EOS film bodies. Though, as a fan of current Cosina/Carl Zeiss collaborations, I'd love to build ZF.2 lens line (28 mm Distagon, 35 mm Distagon, 50 mm Makro-Planar, 100 mm Makro-Planar and upcoming 135 mm Sonnar) for two reasons: ZF.2 lens has an aperture ring (ZEs don't) and having dedicated Nikon-mount Zeiss lenses will allow me to shoot with any Canon or Nikon body with fully operable basic functions.

— Nikon's AF is better. Less errors than in Canon world, but still I hate AF philosophy at all because of focus hunting. Manual control is still unmatched, so good viewfinder and accurate S-type focusing screen are an alpha and omega in my book.

— I prefer Nikon lenses for their rendering style, but again, Cosina Voigtläner and Cosina Carl Zeiss are way, WAAAAAAY nicer. Also, dislike nasty yellow cast the 105 VR has.

— Nikon files are more pleasant to work with. No banding, good color (but I am still very strange at begging for Foveon technology in EVERYTHING!), good dynamic range, good low-light capabilities (though, I consider myself as a low-ISO shooter).

— Nikon has a Capture NX software which allowed me to pass the Photoshop at all (I hate everything about Adobe). Yep, it is buggy, crashes too often, but I like what it I could get from my NEFs.

Should I acquire another Canon body? Well, it's a tough question. Nikon answers my special demands, but with all honesty, I don't like the way digital technology is going to be. Foveon sensor is patented, so this is a grow-stopper for us all because of no competition. Sigma plays in its own league. Foveon's colors remind me of good ol' film and are so beautiful to look at. If Sigma will release a FF body, THIS will be my next system. Before that, I'll stick with F system. In the ideal world, I'd like to see Foveon sensor in the Nikon body, but unfortunally, this will never happen.

p.1 #8 · Shoot BOTH Nikon and Canon?

I was a very happy camper with Canon for over 50 years.....until my (and many other's) dismal experience with their 1D3 AF and the strange responses in denial by Canon Corp. in the matter.

Then, in early 2008, I got a whiff that Nikon was making a credible run on Canon with the D300 and then the D3.

So, without boring you further, I'm now in both Canon and Nikon tents. Still with Canon because I've got a lot of glass and my 1D4 has put Canon back in the game. And, hopefully, the new 1Dx will raise eyebrows again.

But I have to say my Nikon D3s is 'from another planet' as to hi-ISO output. And a D700 is my main walk-around cam. The latter not least due the pop-up flash so always have a very convenient boost where a shot would simply not work without extra light FROM ANY SOURCE! The old saw that only low-end cams need a pop-up is, to coin a phrase, 'bullshit'!

Pretty sure that was "coined" well before you were born.

I shoot both. This after about 20 years of using Minolta gear. Can't honestly say one is better than the other. They all work fine. The strength for me of Canon is the ability to mount my large slew of alternative lenses. The Nikon body I have was bought specifically to shoot with my old Nikon 800/5.6.

I shoot both Nikon and Canon, Nikon with my 500/4 AFS-II and 300/2.8 VR and Canon with everything else including wide stuff and a 70-200/4 IS and a 400/5.6. I seem to have the same problems with each -- no noticeable difference in IQ. I got a D300s to use with the Nikon lenses, but that camera had an unfortunate date with some asphalt paving while on a trip so I have no Nikon camera to use with those lenses. Used to be Canon long glass was significantly cheaper than Nikon, but now that has reversed, so I'm thinking of getting a D800 and maybe some wide glass for Nikon for landscapes. Either that or I should sell my Nikon glass and just get a 5DIII. It's a bit of a dilemma.

p.1 #13 · Shoot BOTH Nikon and Canon?

I once upon a time, and once again shoot both. Was Nikon exclusively from 1980 to 1999, then mixed for about a year, then Canon from 2000 until now, and now once again both.

Hardest part for me is how everything is backwards between the two systems: lens mount & unmount in different directions, manual focus (all I use) works in opposite directions, zoom (push pull) works in opposite directions. It's maddening, like how auto makers (even the same brand) can't figure out which side of the car to put the gas cap on.

But my problem is that neither Canon nor Nikon did everything I wanted. In the old days, Canon was years ahead of Nikon with autofocus, image stabilization and digital imaging. Then Canon got lazy and Nikon pulled ahead (about 5 years ago). And now Canon is pretty much focused on video, which I have no use for. So I am once again in the Nikon crowd.

So yes, it can be done, but it gets expensive and can be a bit confusing, although if you use auto-everything it is probably less so. The key is to use whatever is necessary to get the job done the way you want it.

This describes us. I seriously considered buying a 5D and a 35 and maybe an 85 just for FF, but eventually we decided to stick with Nikon, so we've been freelancing and saving up for D700s that we'll buy from here in a couple of weeks. I've already bought a 35 from here, and am eagerly scanning the B/S forum for bodies.
