p.1 #1 · Anyone try 1:1 macro with the D800?

I love my 105mm VR but it's collecting dust, hopefully it changes when summer is fully here, but I'd love to see how crazy the detail would be and if cropping in, would you be able to make that shot look like a 5:1 shot?

Sure, the 36-megapixel sensor on the D800 can be cropped to look like a 5:1 macro... compared to a 1.5-megapixel camera with a 1:1 macro.

5:1 is the magnification ratio and just can't be achieved by cropping.

Which is why I said - "look".

I wish Nikon would just release something that blows the MP-E out of the water. What's more they really freaking could too because Nikon's microscopes are crazy.

Plus I don't want to spend money looking for 19mm or 65mm Macro-Nikkor.

Raynox DCR-250 coupled with some extension tubes can get you really close to 5:1.

Raynox DCR-250 2.5x Super Macro Lens

Here is my quick test. All shots were hand-held and shot at Small JPEG with Basic quality, and resized in View NX without any other modifications.

1. D800 & 50 1.8G with DCR-150 (at 1.5x magnification) at the min focus distance.

Thanks!

I have thought about getting a DCR-250 for my 105 for a while. Any shots of it with bugs?

Would be nice to even have a relative option. The MP-E is sweet. It's one of the only pieces of Canon glass I lust over.

Nikon has already manufactured lenses that will get you from 1:1 magnification to about 25:1 mag - and you can purchase a set right now:

Do a google search for Macrophot lenses - true macro Nikkors. (The current 105 and 60mm lenses are micro Nikkors...)
