Cuz if you change body you don't have to do another MA as long as the body tolerance is in range ?.

bobbytan wrote:
I am curious as to why you would send it to Canon instead of do an AF micro adjustment yourself periodically ... and what does Canon charge to check and recalibrate a lens?

If you have more than 1 body I would assume you do the AF micro adjust on all bodies. There must be a better reason or logic.

For me that's the only reason. I use my lenses to test new body, bought a 2nd 7D quickly tested that it's front focusing; quickly exchanged it before my long vacation started.

Exactly the reports of backfocus and the limited sharpness abilities have held me back from trying the 50L since it came out. A week ago I decided to check more recent reports and also the database here, which was very helpful and to my surprise the majority of comments changed to being very positive! Why the issues seem to have lifted is not clear to me...maybe due to the ability to overcome focusing issues by microadjustment in newer Canon cameras (since 5D2 and 1DsMKIII). And it's also speculated that newer revisions haven't got problems as severe, but I think noone can tell for sure.
I have also have a Zeiss 50/2 and a (well actually three) Minolta Rokkor 58/1.2. If I go to shoot landscape or architecture, I wouldn't go without the Zeiss. It is insanely sharp (the only lens sharper which is still in the normal range is the Leica R 60mm Macro), but I finally want some normal FL with AF as a walkaround lens, for portrait work and for bokeh FUN, which the Zeiss isn't...the Rokkor is of course, but I don't like to shoot LiveView all the time
I'm very impressed by what I see from an aesthetic point of view when I look at samples and think (and hope) it will be fun to shoot.
From my first tests today, I can tell that focus is off a little bit, but it doesn't seem to be inconsistently off, so MA might be able to help. Luckily it's an UA model (2012), which hopefully means that I don't have to send it in.
Corner to corner it is better than the Rokkor it seems, so far I am impressed.

Nice accompaniment to my 35L I hope.
Must seem a little strange that I switched to discuss the 50L as an alternate solution to something as comfortable as the new Tamrom. Very off-topic, I know. But after I saw the onions, I for one realized again that my satisfaction can't be found in total comfort.

I would say that the 50L is my go-to lens in most situation. When I first bought it it was backfocusing, so I sent it into Canon for repair. Since it's come back it's been a very able, reliable performer. I tend to get my lenses calibrated every 12 months if they get heavy use. Its preventative maintenence that keeps the lens at a high performance level.

Ok let's see if we can get this thread back on 24-79vc topic

I just saw its come up for,pre order here in the uk (wex, Park & Jacobs) for £1099 .

I would hope that when it's actually in stock and the Pre orders have been filled it may drop a bit . I think under £1k and they will sell pretty well.

Personally if Canon do what thy did with the 70-200 upgrade he Tamron will be left for Nikon and Sony guys on a budget.
From the test pics posted off the 1Dx it looked pretty amazing at 2.8 so unless you "need" the IS it's a no brainer..

Price might be an obstacle for many. If I could get 95% of the image quality with image stabilization thrown in for 1/2 the price...that is very appealing to me.

This is the only lens I want to add to my bag this year.

I'm sure the 24-70 II is going to be spectacularly good, but I'm not going to spend upwards of $2k for a lens and not get IS.

I just got an e-mail from B&H 4/26/12 and the lens is Back Ordered. I called and they haven't received any from Tamron yet with no guidance as to when they will come in. B&H said they were checking on shipment today and would e-mail me a new shipping date within twenty four (24) hours. I'm disapointed but it's not the end of the world. Might check with other suppliers but would expect the same answer.

I'll wait cause there's no way I'm paying more for 24-70 f2.8 without IS.

Yeah no f/2.8 and not nearly as sharp. Is it even much smaller and lighter?

If you shoot a lot at f/8, the 24-105L is plenty sharp. Again, it all depends on your needs.

I placed my order with Adorama on the 7th (they offered free shipping), and haven't gotten an update for more than a week.

I called Adorama after I got the 7-10 day delay letter from B&H and they don't expect their shipment for at least a week either so I guess Tamron's just late shipping to everyone.

NEW INFO- Called B&H about matching the Free Shipping Adorama has and they credited the shipping cost back to me plus Mark said the lenses shipment has deffinitely come in after they sent the letter about the 7-10 day delay. Lens is now shipping in the morning for sure.

Oh well... it's not troubling to me... much more important for it to satisfy me when I do get it than to get it right away.

is *IS* really that important on this size lens? I just ordered the canon MK I for the same price.

Some people couldn't care less, other people crave it. I am part of the latter. For me IS is an extra tool in my bag that raises the % of good shots I take. I am willing to pay several hundred of dollars extra for a lens with IS compared to an identical non-IS version, even in the standard focal lenght range

Any lens with a 4-stop IS is a huge advantage ... unless you are only shooting sports and anything that moves.

Or unless you always use a tripod.
