I was intent on getting the Mola Demi to use with a Nikon SB-900 speedlight and Pocketwizard TT5 until I saw the collapsible Chimera Octa 2 beauty dish. Has anyone used the Octa 2 and how does it compare to traditional beauty dishes such as the Demi?
Also, has anyone used a small strobe on the Mola Demi? What kind of f-stops are you getting at 1/2 power at ISO 200-400. Is the dish too big for a small strobe? I have a home-made15 inch beauty dish that I have rigged a SB-900 to and it works pretty well.
I am also looking at an alternative to the Mola Lumi Two Tilt Bracket which is way overpriced. I had a speedring from an Impact softbox that is similar to the Strobist speedring such as at the link below. Is there any way to mount that ring on the Mola?
i was debating between the 2 as well as you a few months ago, i ended up finding a good deal on the mola so i just picked it up a couple of weeks ago, so i havent really had the chance to try it, but i did manage to rigged my strobist bracket to fit the mola without major modifications and use my sb900 with it, i don't have any pics at the moment thou. (i know im not a big help)
i couldn't find anybody using or testing the chimera octa 2 so i didn't want to be the first one but i do like the concept and design. but the mola quality is top notch too.
Thanks Ozpali. I really want to get the Demi but I don't have a lot of room when it comes to transporting gear especially when travelling to different cities. I often use the Photek Softliter for travel and location shoots. The Chimera would be great to tuck into a roller case. I just think the design of the Mola might be better.
Just ordered a mola demi, couldn't spring for the grid at same time, but will in not to distant future. Having to get the speedring killed that. Shame BH doesn't ship till the 15th this month.
I assume you mean a speedlight vs a monolight? I don't know. I never used mine with a speedlight flash. I imagine if you have a diffuser on the end of your speedlight to help spread the light out it should be the same.
