p.1 #1 · Sigma 120-400 OS vs Sigma 70-200 OS + 2x TC?
Hi all, I am curious how the sigma 120-400 OS would compare to sigma's latest 70-200 OS combined with the 2x TC at the 400mm F5.6 end? The versatility of the second option sounds great, but I have heard poor things about trying to reach serious telephoto distances with a 2x tc. Would love to hear about any experience with either of these setups. Thanks! -L

My father has the 120-400. It is a dog of a lens. Images look alright from it, but it has already been sent in because it wasn't working, the OS makes a humming noise & it is so clunky in operation. I wouldn't recommend it myself.

Take a look at the Sigma 150-500 OS and Bigma 50-500 OS. I just got the Bigma and on my D7000 the images are very good. I used the Bigma for the first time at the Sebring Sports Car race a few weeks ago and very happy with the results. Built quality is as good as Nikon/Canon IMO, AF & OS works very well with D7000. Only issue is the lens hood and cap, they don't snap into place & hold like Nikons and the hood can bind. Lot's of threads on this with sample images at Nikonians and Hedge Hog.

The Nikon version 1 is definitely out of my price range, as is the 120-300 unfortunately. The 150-500 and 50-500 are reasonably affordable but they are real monsters, I want to keep it smaller and lighter than that for carrying in my backpack. What about the 100-300 F4 with the 1.4tc? Definitely cheaper and lighter than the 120-300, and I can live with F5.6.
