Is this a common thing? Just read it, if it is true, is this a common occurence in pro-sumer DSLRs?

Sony makes the best sensors and Nikon then tweaks them to make them better and to their specifications.

Pentax also uses Sony, Canon makes their own and I am not sure on Olympus and others.

Not a big deal because it happens all over. Apple and Samsung are suing each other but that lovely screen on the new iPad is a Samsung.

Thanks!

Yeah, it's hilarious about the Apple/Samsung debacle.

IIRC Toshiba supplied the sensor for the d700 too.

Nikon designs the sensors and Sony fabs them. This means that they have to work close together during the fabrication process.

Yup, the D7000 sensor is made by Sony. Incidentally, I bought my good lady a Sony NEX-C3 recently, 16.2 MP sensor too as it happens. Results are strikingly similar to my D7000. If I were a betting man.......

as to the "best" i wouldn't want to say that as if it were a fact. there are a few more makers that generally don't show up on the "well known" radar. the former "Kodak KAF " sensors (now in the hands of an investor group after being sold off and called Truesense) and Dalsa (which has a few products out there that are "beyond the average") also aptina (J1/V1)

Just like Nikon since it's part of the Mitsubishi Group.
