for me travel kit is very simple to put together:
DX: Tokina 11-16/2.8 + Nikon 35/1.8 + 70-300VR
anything is covered and you not that loaded
FX: Nikon 24/1.4 + Sigma 85/1.4 + Sigma 300/4
my magic pack Three primes that can cover me for anything. I have wide, portrait, and macro/tele at the same time. If you need more reach slap Sigma 1.4TC and you got 420/5.6 MF easy. Everything fits nicely into TT Retro 10 and I can carry it all day without breaking back
Bottom line its travel and not work - so take as less as possible in gear. Take time to enjoy yourself and make best of photography with less - think about shoot and dont think about what you dont have.

The Tamron 18-270 doesnt weight 1200g. It weights less than half that.
I usually go with the Nikon 10-24, the 35 f1.8 and the 18-105VR when I want to travel light. I also have the above mentioned Tamron and is not as sharp as the 18-105.

There's a question on the Canon forum about the Tamron 18-270 VC and having used it for an air show in Feb (one I wasn't expecting even though I follow several forums about Cozumel) I think it did very well. Rather than repeat what I did in the Canon forum here's my thoughts.
