I have not used the 70-200 VR 1 but i hear it is not the best
Damn I made $110/hr + expenses with mine for a couple of years on several different body's...
sure wish I'd read this sooner. The ONLY reason I'm shootin' with the VR II now,
is it's uncanny ability to handle all the Nikon TC's. Period.

70-200vr1 user on a D700. this is nonsense. that lens is a beaut on FX or DX!! fast and accurate AF, ridiculously shallow DOF, sharp center throughout the zoom range, and of course 'monkey approved. . if you dont consider those things, then i guess yeah, i agree its not the best...

The VRII has better corner to corner sharpness than the VRI, but the difference isn't huge. As the OP is shooting DX, the VRI is more than up to the job. As trenchmonkey says though, if you're likely to use TCs, the VRII is the best bet.
The 80-200 AF-S is fantastic too - optically superb. No VR though and service parts are becoming scarce these days. Takes TCs well too.
