Haven't read all this, but I use a 7D and have it set to turn red when locked in. If it's bright outside, it's very hard to tell that the focus point has turned red. Otherwise it works quite well. As others said, the green light at the bottom of the viewfinder isn't really useful if you're shooting action -- you can't look down there and keep the shot framed. Haven't looked at a 5DIII, but are the focus points smaller than the ones on the 7D? Maybe that is the bigger problem with seeing the color change.

7D users are younger ... brain works faster too . When you're getting old you don't like to change, you like to repeat saying things over, over, and over like my granny does .

If you don't like the 5D Mark III, either you sell it and get another one even switch to another brand, if you feel necessary or you find a way to work around it. While I can see the point of

Why not go to your local store and try it yourself ?. I've used 7D for last few years and I don't recall any issue with it but that's for me though.

+1

Really it's the only way. Read all you want on the net but you won't know till you try.

You old timers like 9, right? So set to show 9.

If you are shooting action, I assume in AI Servo, the AF is not locked. Similar to other Canon bodies (except the 1D series where the active AF point is lit, only lit but not locked in that mode) none of the AF point is lit but the active AF point (including the surrounding AF points displayed in smaller boxes) is there. And yes, the green light is not lit in that mode either. Yes, it is more for a single shot mode only. BTW, the size of the "boxes" in both cameras, 7D and 5D Mark III, is the same.

Canon made a big mistake should have put the famous 9 diamond AF points on the Mark III .

Interesting... and long read

Not sure if this will be an annoyance one can adapt to or not... you know.. coming from the good old reliable 5D2 and all.

45 cross types, and that's what I have selected it to. Still many.

And for all smartasses - I did also choose the option of 9 or 15, but that's no good because of the stupid ass arrangement of those - you get a flat strip, without the upper and lower column in the middle, which is retarded for framing. On all the 1D bodies thus far when I limited it to 9 points, they were actually usable.

Yeah, I am debating whether to select 45 or 61 myself. With that said, I am impressed with the outer columns of the AF points on the left and right, if held in landscape, although they are horizontal-type AF points, they are very zippy as well, which is a big improvement over those of the 5D Mark II. Chances are, I will stick with all 61 points myself. The more the merrier .

I don't have a 5D II (yet) but I would go with the more sensitive 45 cross-type points.

Bobby, I let you play with mine tomorrow.... I mean my camera, OK ? You will see how fast it focuses and how responsive the AF points are even the outer non-cross type points.

I've read your posts and I finally think you are right Canon should have just delivered a 45MP, 3 fps, and the 9 points AF camera. We would have avoided any threads about VF and AF points illumination .

If the 9 AF points actually worked, it may not have been a bad camera indeed. I never used any of my 1D and 1Ds bodies with more than 9 AF points anyway.

That's what I'm saying 9 AF points from 40D or 50D is probably enough for most users. They work just fine. I'll send an email to Chuck Westfall requesting a 5D IV with that kind of AF.

I think I made it pretty clear what I mean, but your insistence to keep poking fun at it shows me that there's really no need to elaborate any further.

Seriously I'll send one requesting 9 AF points system that works. Hopefully we'll see this on 5D IV.
