p.1 #1 · D800 with Adobe Lightroom - Performance?

Lightroom is somewhat slow when rendering RAW files from 12MP bodies, and even suffers from occasional freezes (64-bit Win/7) during intensive editing. One concern is that large RAW files could result in a significant decrease in LR performance. For those who already have D800's, what are you seeing in LR relative to images that came +/- 12MP camera's?

What kind of computer do you have that LR chokes on 12mp files?

D800 NEF is take longer to raw convert but not 3 times longer compare to D700'sNEF. But USB3 on D800 really speed up a download time to a computer.

...12mp, that's the size of the D700 files. You sure you aren't making a mistake? LR runs fine with my D700 files of the same size, so can't see what the problem could be.

PC is 8gb, 2TB, big LR cache, Core I7/920, Win/7 64-bit.

IMO LR isn't blazing fast when rendering images from 12.3 (e.g. D700) bodies, and it does experience temporary lock-up's during heavy editing. Significant spot removal seems to be the biggest culprit. I've seen this happen on more than one PC, and on three versions (2, 3 and 4) of LR. There are hints that the lockups could be related to video adapters or drivers, but who knows?

The original question wasn't meant to flame LR, but rather to get an idea as to how LR performance is impacted when working with ~50MB RAW files (D800) as opposed to ~15MB (D700) files.

lockups probably have something to do with hitting disk. lightroom uses very little GPU, particularly for things like spot removal.

I haven't had any problems using it yet with my D7000 raw file that range around 23-24MB each and my machine isn't near the specs of yours.

If you do a lot of spot removal you'll see performance hiccups on any files. Can't say for sure if the D800 files would suffer this any worse. I can tell you that it takes about 17 seconds to import a single D800 file on my old Q6600 quad with 4GB RAM though

If you think it's slow now, wait till you get LR4!

LR4 + D800 megafiles = New Computer.

LR4 runs slower than previous LRs?

I wonder if there is a similar slowing down with D800 & photomechanic ?

The problem is you're running it on a PC...... Just kidding!!!! hahaha

That's strange though. I have no problem at all with 16mp RAW files and I'm running on a 250GB HD with only 1.5GB RAM.

I have NOT noticed any significant processing latency in LR4 between D800 and D700 uncompressed raw files. My setup is PC with 16GB RAM and 7200RPM 500GB drives.

Download D800 samples available on the Internet (full size) and import them into your LR4 just to see how it perform.

Sounds like you missed my thread here :

I'm certainly seeing some sluggishness compared to 12MP, but it's still usable.
