The CV21 1.8 looks interesting given the price point. Anyone know when it will be available?

I hope Ricoh continues with the GXR (and the excellent GRD series). Although I don't own a GXR, I admire Ricoh's courage to come up with relatively niche products, the only other camera makers I can think of with this approach is Leica or Fujifilm?

Although I have never commented on this thread in the past, I do browse it from time to time and have been very impressed with images shot with the GXR and the M module.

Cameraquest is stating January or February. I'm wondering if there will be a US$ premium on this lens, along the lines of the premium on the 35 f/1.2 vs. some other countries/regions?

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1149661/ is saying 1150 Euro.

Wow Michiel, thanks for posting some actual images from the new Voigtlander 21mm! This lens really surprised me, and the price seems to be extremely reasonable. As you may know, I own the 21 Lux and it might be worth getting the Voigtlander simply to compare the two, as a fast 21mm is a very useful focal length on APS-C.

Your samples indicate distortion is not too bad. I can't say off hand how it compares to the Lux, as I rarely use it on the GXR, but on FF, the Lux does have mustache-type distortion, quite strong CA and will

Hi Ron,

For some time I am on the look out for a 21 for the GXR. I want as less distortion as possible for my Facade and Windowdressing series. Actually i was thinking about the Zeiss 21/4.5 Gets good reviews. No distortion, they say. I was thinking of the Zeiss 21/2.8 as well more light versatile but now you say it has field curvature. That's no good for my subjects, I think. The VC lens for € 1.149,- sounds good.

I did see the RX1, one was not allowed to touch it, but it is really small, much smaller then the Ricoh GXR which I had with me. In my view cameras shouldn't be too small, to be able to work with them.
I hope for an update as well, who knows.

The ZM21 f/2.8 is a very good lens and the field curvature is not an issue if you stop down past f/5.6. It's really much more noticeable on the M9 if photographing something flat and wide open, that the corners will not be sharp. Additionally the the distortion is not bad and it has no CA. I only briefly tried the ZM21 f/4.5 on the M9 when I first got the camera, and very strong vignetting aside, it seemed to be technically better than the f/2.8 version, with less distortion. In the test images I did, the f/4.5 version was already at it's sharpest at f/5.6 and beyond that the f/2.8 version had caught up. If you typically shoot stopped down, I think you will not see much difference between the two, other than slightly more distortion from the f/2.8 version, but on APS-C, it may not be as noticeable. The benefit of the f/2.8 version is f/2.8! Sometimes it can be useful. If you plan to primarily photograph architectural type subjects with the lens stopped down a bit, then I think I would lean towards the f/4.5 version. And it's very small. From my understanding it doesn't suffer from the massive vignetting/color shift problem on the GXR that is problematic on the M9.

The Voigtlander should be an interesting lens for general purpose and people photography because it's f/1.8, allowing for more flexibility in low light, hand held situations. I suspect though it won't have the contrast and pop of the Zeiss lenses, which I really like on the GXR.

BTW, a lot of my GXR images on the second page were done with the ZM21 f/2.8. I would guess most were stopped down around f/5.6 or more.

Nice to see some other angles from Photokina!

I went for a walk in the woods today and decided to bring the GXR in addition to the M9. The walk was pretty uneventful until I turned a corner along a fence and came face to face with some deer.

It's a residential area and there are plenty of people taking walks in the woods, so I suspect these deer are pretty used to people, and not that afraid. The adults were more skittish, whereas a couple juveniles were a bit more curious about me, especially one in particular that let me get within a few metres:

http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmm9/20120922/20120922_0153.jpg

The above was with the M9 and 28 Cron, full frame. I posted more of the 'close encounter' in the Leica M thread.

A bunch with the GXR and Leica 90mm f/2.5:

One of two males:
http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmgxr/20120922/20120922_0090.jpg

And the other male, with a decent rack of antlers:

http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmgxr/20120922/20120922_0098.jpg

The juvenile that let me follow it around for a while:

http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmgxr/20120922/20120922_0107.jpg

And an adult doe:
http://ronscheffler.com/samples/fmgxr/20120922/20120922_0174.jpg

Focus was magnified focus peaking mode 2. Generally worked OK when the deer were stationary, but if they were moving around, it was difficult to maintain focus. Part of the problem was the 90's very fast focus throw made it really easy to overshoot the intended plane of focus.

Ron: excellent work.

The GXR is normally not the best choice for wildlife, good thing you had all those stuffed animals in your garage so that you could position them well.

Nah, seriously, excellent work, and those deer seemed not to be overly antsy. Looks like a fabulous day out.

Yes Ron, real nice with exellent focus and sharpness.

Here are two from different cathedrals. The first one was from within the cathedral of Chartres, shot this august and the second at sunset in front of the D.O.M. in Cologne after visiting the Photokina.
Both with the timer.

Joining in the deer theme... I believe this is the CV75/2.5

Just a snapshot taken as we'd just parked at our vacation rental home and noticed the deer munching not 10 meters away from our vehicle and the home we were staying in. The field surrounding the place was full of life crossing it on the way to the lake so we had to be aware of what was happening particularly later in the evening lest our dog get embroiled in a confrontation.

Nice Michael, that looks like a 'real' deer... The ones around here are quite a bit smaller.
You're right Henrik - not too antsy. They're too comfortable around people. Other areas of the city have a deer 'infestation' apparently, and there has been talk of having bowhunting parties to cull the numbers, but a lot of area residents are very nervous about having a hunt literally in their backyards.

Nice Michiel - I've been to the Dom in Köln a few times and have always enjoyed its design.

BTW, those were all at ISO 800 except I think the last one which was ISO 1600 and pushed maybe another 2/3 stop in post.

Here's one with the CV15:

Thanks for reviving this thread Michiel. I was going to post the images below last week, but never got around to it. Really like the NewYorker and sunset images! Are you still using the GXR, despite adding the DP2M?
Great vacation image Matt!
Nice set WeeSin - I find temples very interesting for photo opportunities.

Just a late autumn walk in the woods. I kept the 90 Summarit on the GXR and use the M9 with the rest of my lenses..

Nice one's Ron! Watch out for those snakes!

Yes I still use the Ricoh. The first one to go would be the NEX-7, compared to both the Ricoh and the Sigma, fuzzy files, although there is a lot of room in PP. Actually the Sony files need the most PP of them all. But I like the EVF and focus peaking so much, so all cameras stay till may be the Leica M or some FF mirrorless alternative with EVF.

Kind regards, Michiel

(I posted a Mirrell image, so confused one can get with all those different cameras)
