p.1 #1 · Zeiss 70-200 f/2.8 ZE coming?

A recent rumor from canonrumors.com

Man, this is a lens! It would be a dream come true!

You should probably expect a 135/1.8 or a wide aperture 180/200. IMHO a zoom is highly unlikely.

Probably a DSLR Cine lens which will demand Cine lens prices

If it is priced for non-movie industry enthusiasts and stills professional, that'd be pretty interesting

The lens shown in the photo definitely isn't ZE/ZF mount. Perhaps it could be a cine mount of some kind (e.g. PL? I'm not really familiar with those). A cine mount zoom lens could be a possibility, but it would only "be a dream come true" for those able to shell out five figure prices for their dreams.

A zoom is highly likely and was already mentioned, but without exact specs, in this December 2011 issue of Film & Digital Times (pdf) on pg. 16. Yes, it's a cine lens, but covers the full 24x36 and will certainly be available as a ZE/ZF version, just like all ZE/ZF are available as Compact Primes.

I've already read about this lens, I don't know why it's on CanonRumours when Zeiss has pretty much confirmed it. From the reports I read, it's definitely a cine lens. I'll look for the links and post them.

Being a cine lens, there would be no auto-stop down and no electrical contacts, I assume?

It is a PL mount, but on all Zeiss Cine lenses the mount can be changed from PL to EF to Nikon.

It doesn't seem built like a Cine lens, though, I don't see any focus or aperture gearing (if that's a real image). If it is a Cine lens, $10k would be wayyyyy low. The 15-45 Zeiss LWZ.2 T/2.6 is $29,000 (and there's a waiting list at that price).

If I was Zeiss I would rather produce a 24-70 or something like that. I think the market is way bigger for that.

Canon already offers super sharp 70-200's in both 2.8 and 4.0 apertures (4.0 have outstanding price/performance ratio if you ask me). IMO Zeiss could make more impact on the 24-70 focal lengths.

I also think it's highly unlikely Zeiss will put AF or IS in a tele because that would be reverse-engineering and that is something I don't expect Zeiss to do. I also don't think that Canon will give them a license to use their USM or whatever.

Who wants a 70-200 without IS and AF? I don't think the market is big enough to invest into the production of that kind of lens.

From their Facebook page

The new ZEISS compact lightweight zoomlenses will cover full still format 24x36 mm and complete the line of Compact Prime CP.2 lenses with interchangeable mount. More details about it will be announced at NAB 2012.

I fail to see the business sense if this is true. The Canon 70-200 family of lens are truly in a class of their own. (Although I do enjoy my CYZ 80-200 f/4).

Thats designed for C300, pretty sure about that. So it most likely wont be that good for taking photos..

Tho it might be pretty interesting lens, just guess price will be slightly insane.

Zeiss already makes a 24-70... it's called the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm ZA F2.8 SSM. It's very Zeissy in it's rendering.

And it has IBIS. Zeiss probably would never want Lens stabilization since it pollutes the optical path.

All of the CP.2 lenses are rehoused and cherry-picked ZE/ZF lenses, so it doesn't preclude the usual ZE/ZF features if it is also released in that line. IIRC the CP.2 lenses are in the $4-5k range. Maybe the zoom will be more expensive, but if a ZE/ZF variant becomes available, I would expect it to be in a 'lower' price point.

I too am left a bit puzzled about the usefulness of a manual focus, non-IS, large, heavy 70-200ish zoom for stills. But, there might be a market for it if done right. For motion many would appreciate a zoom that holds focus accurately through its entire zoom range (I would expect this to be the case since it will appear at NAB, tailored to this audience) and a lens like this would fill a spot between using a Canikon 70-200 or a higher end cine zoom.

I don't think a Zeiss 70-200 cine zoom is "competing" with any of Canon's 70-200 offerings. Zeiss is marketing this towards people willing to pay double the prices of (already expensive) ZE/ZF lenses to get the same optics in "compact prime" improved mechanical mounts --- there are lots of highly specialized qualities desired in professional video lenses that still shooters rarely even think about. The Canon 70-200s, while excellent still photo lenses, are pretty terrible according to the different standards that potential purchasers of Zeiss' cine lenses are interested in.
