I thought it was funny how you save a couple $ on non Canon batteries on a new, $3500 camera. Not to mention it might void the warranty? Thanks for posting your opinions though. Really like the lobster monger shot.

Thank you all (so many you'll have to forgive my not replying individually).
I did go to the book launch tonight and set the ISO range to 100-25,600 and that's all I shot -- with three lenses this time: 100/2.8 L macro, 50/1.4, and 135/2 (set at something higher than f/2.0 this time ), so I'll try to look through them and post some in the next couple of days.
On an initial note, it did seem like a shoot-in-the-dark camera, although I'm only going by what I see on the LCD. Things can change when they get to the computer.

Thanks, Don! Looking forward to more of your shots, and your impressions of the camera. A few of these are very good -- National Geographic quality -- like the lobster salesman. A terrific slice of life in HK. I'd love to see you team up with Kai at Digital Rev on an episode. Your effort is appreciated.

Thanks for the write-up. The images - not the composition or the subjects but the look/palette/IQ - look like typical digital reddish overprocessed mush to me. Sorry if that hurt anyone's sensibilities - I know there are a lot of Canon DSLR fans here - but I got to call it the way a lot of us are likely seeing it.
Obviously not putting Don's writeup or effort down in any way whatsoever. Loved reading it, and living vicariously in Hong Kong.

Well, the less you sophisticates want the camera, the sooner it will be affordable for the rest of us
PS: an example of typical digital reddish overprocessed mush from the OP's set, reddish mush visible behind some flowers.

thanks for the raw!
i will check them out
(one note, it seems like you favor 'main' ISOs + 1/3 stop, but those tend to have less dynamic range and more shadow noise than both 1/3 stop below or above.)
EDIT: after a few quick peeks:
1. DR on production models, as with pre-rpo models, looks to be not any better than on the 5D2, looks the same, it will be interesting to see if the 1DX does better, if not, then canon seems to be really badly patent-blocked (or just doesn't care), if so, then it really stinks they have us wait 3.5 years for the 5D3 and then use their old sensor tech on it....
2. On a more positive note, it seems like the focus was dead on whatever appeared to be your main subject for the 4 photos I've looked at so far, and the one with the shopkeeper in the market, at ISO125, he was pretty well shaded and there was bright stuff with all sorts of detail behind him and yet the shop keeper was 100% nailed in focus, I know the xxD and 5D2 and 7D would miss that sort of shot more often than make it, if you didn't just get lucky there, or didn't weed out the junk already, then that is promising

5D3 CR2 prototype raw can be read by Irfranview but canon has change the format in production one. I have verified the low iso shadows noise in these samples and look like not much improved from 5d2: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1094591/5#lastmessage

Good review of a camera I wont soon be able to afford. I looked at your website too, and what an impressive piece of work. Interesting writing, beautiful photos, and some very interesting experiences you write about and document with photos. An enjoyable read/view on all accounts. Thanks!

Thanks for the writeup. Being a landscape shooter, I'm not very interested in the high ISO capabilities --- I'm more interested in what the camera can do at low ISO. I'm glad you've included many images at the base ISO. I use to own the 1DsIII, and am use to the kind of 1:1 detail that one can expect from that camera. Based on the jpegs (I can't view the RAW), I don't get anywhere near that feeling. I hope that it's just a jpeg processing thing, but if the RAW files look similar --- I suspect we may see the 1DsIII go up in value on the used market.

Nice write up Don thanks.
One thing you do realize that the cover on all Canon SLRs is actually a protective cover itself for the actual LCD. Hence your going to put a protective cover over a protective cover..
I've always found a film cover makes viewing the screen far more difficult as the coatings Canon use make it far easier to see images in daylight conditions.
Thanks for the info on the Mk3 enjoy it!
