they're giant though and not thrilling optically. personally the zm 18 excites me much more than any zoom wides.
It's really no bigger than a fd 55/1.2, and it is pretty sharp. It's surprising,I'll admit. I'm not a fan of zooms, i've just sold off my 17-40L and 24-105L. This may be sharper.

I have a 5 year old. For me, the first two weeks were no worse than, but no better than the first two weeks of basic training. It gets better after that.

i almost never use my FL 55/1.2 (or rokkor 58/1.2 and samylux) on my NEX because it's overly large IMO, so it depends on what your size threshold is.

Fair enough, I actually agree with you. But what do you do for ultra wide images where stitching isn't practical?
I was describing the search for a wide angle lens for the NEX7 as hitting the proverbal wall in another post. The CV15 Heliar is workable with optimized focus/exposure and Cornerfix. I would like to work with the ZM18 and compare it to a dSLR short zoom like the Tokina 11-16. Yes, the Tokina is huge with the SLR adapter, but I suspect this lens will give quite good performance on the NEX7. It is the darling of the APS-C video world and is still offered in a Alpha mount. One local company remounts this lens with focus sprockets and PL mount and sells it for $3700.
All other legacy SLR super wides in the 17-18mm range will require f/8 minimum for adequate IQ in the corners. The Tokina may cut at least a stop out of that working aperture.

The Tokina is much heavier than the Sigma, and the Sigma reviews show it to be equal to or better than the Tokina. I'm still testing it myself.

You'll have to qualify those claims, because I haven't found that to be the case.
The Sigma is 1-2 stops slower out of the gate, which puts working aperture at f/8-f/11, and the corners are described as still weak. Same story, just buy a 17mm legacy SLR with adapter, stop down to f/8-f/11, set up the tripod and call it a day.

Funny you should mention the 55/1.2, I bought one and really liked it, but returned it, because it was so big. It's also the reason why I've never been that interested in the really great CV 35/1.2. I use the CV 15 on the NEX-5N, and it's hard to compete with the size of that lens.
Glad to hear the first few weeks of having a baby are the worst. I'm practically hallucinating at my keyboard, because of my lack of sleep. Hopefully I don't offer any opinions on the forum that are more ridiculous than normal.

mmmm, that should read first few months. i hear most people have babies that nap though, so perhaps i'm just an outlier.

I dislike the FL 55/1.2 too because of the size, so I hesitate to get the CV 35/1.2 But I got it today and it feel pretty well balanced on GXR-M, so I think it's not primarily about weight (they are about the same weight I think, CV is much slimmer), but how far away the weight distribution is from the body. The addition of FD adapter just make the combination of 55/1.2 with mirrorless body very unbalanced.
By the way I have completely forgotten how I got through the first few months of my first daughter (that was 4 years ago), but you will get better.

I think that, in order to assure procreation in our society, it is commonly undersold just how tough a newborn is to deal with, and my wife has it much worse off than I do.

I already have to use CornerFix with my CV 15 and ZM 35/2 on my 5N, so needing to use CornerFix on the 7 wouldn't change things much, for me.
Douglas, my experience does not replicate yours. It was obvious to me that my ZM 35 f:2.0 (I got it only 10 days ago) would work just fine on my 5N, and it does. I expected to have to clean up the shots in Cornerfix with my 7, but, to my surprise and delight, I have been unable to generate any issues, be they either magenta fringing or corner mush wide open, as also reported on a blog. And I thought I was picky when it comes to colour fringing...
So, what are you seeing, and under what circumstances?
This is a pretty minimal example, and darker conditions usually show it more. On both my Zm 35/2 and a friend's copy, the bottom right corner of the frame seems to be the most affected. Both my Contax G and CV 35/1.4 don't have color shift that is noticeable in my shots, but both my ZM 35/2 and ZM 35/2.8 do have some noticeable shift on the 5N. It is minor compared to many other lenses, but I just can't stand having these artificial magenta tones in my images.

also, sleep deprivation has been shown to have terrible effects on memory retention. this is what allows couples to come to the conclusion that having a second (third, fourth, ...eleventh) child isn't such a crazy idea (i mean we survived fine last time right?).
Thanks for your example. I will look again to see if my shots show this. Any reason, other than decentering, why one corner might show more trouble than others?
