p.1 #1 · Leica R 28 mm and 35 mm both f/2.8 your opinion

Hi,

I have run across two lenses from Leica. A person is
selling them.

One of them is a 28 mm f/2.8, Elmarit I, from the year
1971, for $300 usd

and another one is a 35 mm f/2.8 Elmarit III, from the
year 1980 for $425 usd

A novoflex adapter for Leica R, (used), is being sold for
$135 usd

How reasonable are these prices?

The lenses have no scratches and work well I have been
told.

Any comments and/or opinions are appreciated : ) !!!

Kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

The one I have experience with is the 28/2.8; the version you've listed is a competent lens but no better (perhaps weaker) than similar offerings from Nikon and Contax. Price wise, that's about the going rate but for the money, the Nikon AIS and Contax are better options.
The Leica 28 Elmarit v.2 is a quantum leap forward and priced accordingly.

If you are on a tight budget, the 35 Elmarit is a better choice. If not, you can have both, they are good lenses. BTW, I would not recommend novoflex R-EOS adapter. It's not about the quality or price. On other adapters, changing the lens is a lot easier than novoflex's.

Those are great prices. I'd jump on it.

I only owned the 28. It has amazing color, but suffers from terrible field curvature and vignetting. But it has its charm. If in great shape, you should be able to sell for over $400, so it's a no-loss situation.

The 35 has a better reputation. And I believe the adapter if over $200 new.

Hi,

Thank you for your messages : ) !!!

Supposedly Sebastiao salgado used a 28 mm. in his kit, among other lenses.

The one I have experience with is the 28/2.8; the version you've listed is a competent lens but no better (perhaps weaker) than similar offerings from Nikon and Contax. You mean, the quality and sharpness of the optics is not totally up there?

Thank you, kind regards,

I recently tried an Elmarit 35 (the E55 version) and center resolution/fine detail was outstanding. Corners on full frame were less impressive.

Vignetting, soft corners on a FF camera. The R 28 Elmarit has gone through several iterations since introduction and the earliest one is the weakest. As 28's go, Nikon and Contax versions are more contrasty and the Nikkor is amazingly sharp from MFD to perhaps 10 metres while maintaining sharpness well into the corners. The Nikkor 28/2.8 AIS was a breakthrough in optical design of the time with near-macro capabilities, remains relevant and is being manufactured to this day.

The latest version of the 28 was introduced in 94. Salgado's 'Workers' was published in 93.

Optically, only two versions. The one with the built-in rectangular hood is the second version.

Hi,

It looks like the 35 mm. is a better lens. I also feel tempted by
a flektogon 35 mm. f/2.4 that I am being offered.

Perhaps the 28 mm. should not be taken.

That is perhaps the downside with the older lenses. The new
zeiss lenses don't have these problems, do they?

Kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

IIRC, when you have the center 1/3 of the frame sharp wide open at around 15', it will be gradually go OOF until the edges are terribly OOF at the same focusing distance, but the focal plane will curve in on the sides to just in front of the camera on the sides-- a wild U-turn of focus range! The focus is not even across the frame until f/11-16, at which point diffraction is softening the whole image. I considered the 28/2.8 as a special purpose/special effects lens, but not useful enough for me to keep. Mine had great color and contrast though.

I stand corrected. Snap-on hood version had the same same optical formula from Series 7 filters to E48 transition.

The 28/2.8 is a great lens even in the first version, and $300 is a very good price if condition is good and the hood is included.
The 35/2.8, if it is a E55 version, is great too. Get both and sell one later
