If you're in A mode, the rear dial operates the aperture. If you're in S mode, the rear dial operates the shutter. If you're in M mode, you press down on the keypad to switch between the shutter and aperture being controlled by the rear dial.
To change exposure compensation in A or S mode, you press down on the keypad to use the rear dial to adjust it.

You might really consider the 5N EVF. It's tilt function is fantastic, and you'll still be able to use your wides. Or, there's the Sony wide zoom that's supposed to come out this year, if you go with the NEX-7.
I like how streamlined my NEX-7's EVF is, but there are a number of things about my 5N's EVF that I liked better: tilt, on/off button, a little easier to get a tight seal around my eye.
I actually bought the 5N EVF with the camera, then ended up returning it. I thought it made the NEX unnecessarily bulky and hard to handle, especially when putting it back into the bag. I thought the quality of the image was incredible, it's just not great in practice.

With some reluctance, I am considering ditching the 5N for the 7. Main reason is that I can barely see the rear screen in direct sunlight. I am dismayed there's no UWA solution for the 7... come on Sigma 8-16 in E mount!
what do you use on the NEX-5?
the zm18 actually looks pretty good on the NEX-7 from what i've seen, just a bit of purple fringing that is easy to correct. the cv15 looks pretty good too sharpness wise, but terrible color fringing. those are the two i'm leaning towards as i too am upgrading to a 7 in a month or less (getting impatient).

I use the ZM18 - unless there's a batch correction (through cornerfix), I am not sure if it's worth the time it would take to fix all the shots. Even the CV12 works pretty well on the 5N (I am sure it's definitely not worth the time on the 7.
Looking at the lens roadmap (and then considering the Fuji map), I almost think I should just wait and see what comes out. But it's so hard to shoot in the sun!

meh, most shots taken in direct sun aren't work taking.
actually, the cv12 has very little trouble on most cameras. it's not near as hard on sensors as the cv15.
i believe there is a batch process with cornerfix, the problem of course is the lack of exif to tell it which photos to fix. having perused some raw files from the NEX-7/zm18 combo i don't think i'd bother with cornerfix 90% of the time, but i tend not to notice purple corners.
I'm thinking about getting a cv 12. it is futureproof (works on fullframe) and seems to work well on the nex-7. Would fit right in a 12-24-50-kit (18, 36, 75 equivalent).

is there a way to assign "Live view display" to a soft key? i use manual flash a lot and i hate having to dig for it.
thanks
Nope. The good thing is, assuming you don't need to dig into the menus for other things very often, you can just leave the setup menu on "Live View Display," so, every time you hit the menu then setup up button, you'll be scrolled to the right place. Not great, I know.

I've not used the CV 12 myself, but, the consensus over the last couple of years has been that, while exhibiting less color shift than the CV 15, the sharpness as you get away from center isn't as good as the CV 15. Can anyone confirm this?

I can sort of confirm it. I didn't keep the 12 long enough to extensively test it, but my eyes told me fairly quickly that the 15 was the stronger lens. Now I'm thinking I might replace the 15 with the Sigma 19, or at least give it a try. Not as wide, but the convenience of not having to color-correct would be welcomed, and I wouldn't mind having AF either.
We really need an exceptional 14mm (FF 21mm equiv.) lens for the NEX-7 imo. A wide zoom which covered that focal length would be great as long as the quality was there.
Why not just use the Sony 16mm with and/or without the rather excellent UWA converter ?
I've had the VC 15 and 12 myself, and the 12mm is pretty poor, no where near worth $900 when a $200 lens and $99 converter provide better quality and also AF
VC15 is a good lens, at least on the NEX5, but again, didn't make much sense using a $500 lens thats f4.5 when the 16mm faired about as well stopped down, was cheaper, lighter, and had AF
Its not to say the Sony 16mm is ideal, its not, but neither are any other ultra wide options short of getting a bulky adapter and using APS-C ultra wide zooms designed for DSLR's, which while providing good results, make the entire NEX rig bigger than some DSLR's themselves, totally defeating the point.
RF wide glass just isn't going to work that well on any mirrorless unless its specifically designed for it.
Sony will in time come out with a good quality UWA zoom for next which should be the way to go, but in the meantime, I've found nothing better, nor more practical than the 16mm and UWA converter
