These giant gears and wheels are all that remains from the mechanism that pulled the cable car funicular up the Great Incline to Echo Mt. in 1893. It is part of the Mt. Lowe Railway which was abandoned in 1938 after a series of natural disasters. It is a favorite hike of mine on cool Pasadena days.
Cable cars in Pasadena, Sam? And hiking through the woods also? Ah, how quickly we forget.
Some may not know that Pasadena is at the base of a fairly high mountain (that offers winter skiing).
