I think it is very dependent on the RAID configuration you are using. If you're using a RAID array that has multiple redundancies like RAID 5 or 6, you're asking for trouble if you're not using enterprise drives. If it is simply striping (RAID 0), mirroring (RAID 1), or JBOD, I think you're OK with consumer drives.

A Drobo is different. You have probably never seen or used one. Your answer does not apply to a Drobo
My guess is that Drobo (and probably other NAS manufacturers) have tweaked their OS config to either extend the time that the RAID waits before declaring a timeout and kicking a drive, or to reprogram the TLER setting on drives when it boots. I have my linux RAID box set up to do this latter - its a one line script.
