Wouldn't the AF elements make it not appear in diagrams like most of Zeiss' previous designs?

Besides the Vario Sonnar ZA 24-70mm, has there been other AF Sonnars?

The Canon FD 24/1.4 is an alternative, I posted a couple of shots in the NEX file. And of course the OM 24/2. On FF I don't think it's that great until it's stopped down to 5.6-8. I should take another look on NEX as it's going to be cropped.

Slightly OT, but I'm curious. Do you have any idea how the FD 24/2.0 (think that's what I have) performs on the nex?

I've got lots of old FD lenses (unfortunately they're 800 miles away right now) and I'd like to use them if they'll turn in a good performance, but the discussion probably belongs in another thread.

Just got an email back, to remove the AA filter on the NEX-7 would be $450...

Hmm!? I wonder if this would help at all with WA lenses or it will make no difference.

The Contax G 90 f/2.8 is an autofocus Sonnar.

So is the A mount 135mm f/1.8.

So is the Contax N 100 f/2.8 macro.

Yes... Very good question. If it would fix the issues with WA RF lenses, I might just pony up the cash.

I have serious doubts that removing the AA filter would fix ALL the issues with WA RFs on the NEX-7 ( or 5N) For one thing it must be quite a weak filter, with a sensor so densely populated.. But of course I'm interested to know the results. So interested that I wouldn't mind contributing with some $$ to finance FlyPenFly's NEX-7 surgery. (I'm joking.... but maybe not. Why don't we start collecting funds. ? )

well I just submitted a proposal to Kickstarter so we'll see if they accept then I can take donations to it.

This was my proposal:

Category

Photography
Funding Goal

Less than $1,000
Project Description

To test the results of removing the AA filter from a Sony NEX-7 Camera. Will it affect the performance of wide angle lenses in terms of magenta shift and corner smearing.

Specific to this test, an evaluation of the ZA Zeiss 24mm F1.8 lens will be made in terms of better corner performance.

I will also test any lens that a donator will provide for testing. I will mail the lens back within a week if they live in the CONUS via insured priority mail.
Project Rewards

I will make publicly available the test results with various lenses used for the project.

I will test lenses any donator would send to me and publicly share the results.

FlyPenFly,
Thanks for all this. Look forward to seeing what happens here.
Also, do you think you will keep the lens?

Cool, interesting idea. I guess it'll depend on whether it's the AA itself, the distance of the AA from the sensor, or, as Joakim suggested, maybe the distance of the micro lenses from the sensor, which could be a bigger issue. Surely removing the AA filter will help at least some.

Then there are the sonnars on the Contax T series, the widest of which is the 35 2.8 on Contax T3

Took some today with the C3.

I prefer the rendering with the NEX-7 than the C3.

It's one of the better FD lenses, James. CA can be an issue as it with the entire line, but less so than say the 35/2 or 85/1.8. Good colors and center sharpness, too.
