I'm not a connoisseur of fine lenses but I think this Sony Zeiss looks great.

Are there better lenses? Sure.

Are there more convenient lenses for NEX at this time? I don't think so.

I compared it to the 16mm and the 50mm and I think it does very well.

any closeups you are happy with, watches with environment?
love the last ceiling shot. Did you go f3.5 for the corners?

Fun series of photos.

I don't have any to post (away from home computer) but my experience with the Zeiss 24 has consistently been more along the lines of 'wow - I cannot beleive how nice this thing is for such a small package'.

Coming from a pro body and a 16-35 / 14-24 the nex7/zeiss24 is tiny and featherweight. When I look at the corners at f2 I am just amazed at the detail and sharpness. Yes there is some ca, but this is an easy thing to fix in post if needed.

Anyway - the more info out there the better - thanks for posting these pics and your thoughts.

Are you referring to some of the wrist watch photos I sometimes post?

I went to F3.5 because the lens has a big jump in resolution at F2.8 and up. I was just trying to balance it out with not too high of an ISO.

Another thing to note, is that the post above, the pictures are just using default LR sharpening.

Yes, wrist watch photos! I realize that it does not go close enough for your work with watches, but I am very interested in its close up possibilities. Since you shoot watches you must have a good eye for close up shots, so I wonder what you think of it for close up use. This is one of the features that really attracts me to this lens.
darn, last night 1 on amazon for 999$ and now 18 for 1049$

Just FYI: Apparently Sony is raising their prices in April (according to SonyAlphaRumors). The 24 1.8 E will be going up $100. If you want to try it, now's the time to buy.

Sure I'll give it a spin next time. 35mm close up though probably distorts it a lot but might be fun.

FlyPenFly,
Also interested in your view on the keeper status of this lens considering how well the kit zoom did at 24mm in Philber's examples. From the positive things that you say here I assume that you consider the Zeiss 24mm 1.8 to represent a significant improvement in the areas that you mention, at least enough to warrent the cost.

Did some closer up shots today at a few book stores.

Tried to do mostly close ups with available light and mostly wide open unless DoF issues were a problem.

Looks reasonably Zeissy to me. A lot of people expect every Zeiss lens to render like the old 35/1.4 Contax/Rollei Distagon. This looks a lot like the new 35/1.4 ZE/ZF Distagon to me.

The close range book-bokeh is harsh and disturbing to my eyes.

Nice colours and dof. Looks like a great interior lens for different purposes. You can pretty much smell that cracking leather and feel the wax. Thanks much!!

Any thoughts on whether the Zeiss Distagon 25 2.8 & adapter is an alternative to the ZA24 F1.8 Zeiss with the Nex 7? Understand the size difference and loss of AF.

and speed!

the distagon f/2.8 is optimized for infinity and weak close up while the ZA sonnar appears to be better closeup than at infinity.

From what I remember reading, the Distagon 25mm F2.8 is somewhat similar in that it has poor corners with CA and performs better with closer objects. Or was that the 25mm F2?

My copy has very good corners on FF by F8 (noticeably better than the ZA 24/2) and shows very little CA (as compared to say the 35/2 or the ZA 24/2). Very clean overall with a traditional response to stopping down (central area sharp wide open gradually expanding out as one stops down) . I have no idea what it would look like on the NEX-7 but I'm pretty sure the corners would be plenty sharp on the cropped sensor.

I think the poor corner performance of this lens might be slightly exaggerated. It looks not terrible to me but I no longer have the kit lens to compare.

It does have some CA in the corners even at F8 but it's easily correctable.

Then again, at $1000 you kind of expect it to be excellent everywhere but I guess that's not really the case with any other Zeiss lens either.

Even the 100mm F2 Makro has poor bokeh CA everywhere.

The 50mm F2 Makro has some focus shift

The 50mm F1.4 has some wild performance and focus shift until you stop down.

etc
