Here's a set of D700 vs D3s shots I just took. Shot raw, equal exposures, same lens, processed in LR3 with all defaults but with WB set and the camera profile set to Camera Neutral. WB is 4150 + 15, so better than your average indoor lighting. I'll shoot some incandescent shots tonight.

D700 ISO 1600 vs D3s ISO 2500
D700 ISO 1600 vs D3s ISO 3200
D700 ISO 1600 vs D3s ISO 6400

the best sensor out there if you don't need more than 12-15 Mp.

That would be me, as I shoot events and portraits. I need the high ISO more than high MP count.

I would agree. It's not just straight ISO as people try to compare apples to apples. D3s has a newer and better sensor so there is more than just ISO to look at. I would agree with Marco that is is 1-2 stops better as well, usually towards the 2 stops better mark.

Thanx for this insight. I'm also aware of the better ergonomics, quicker AF, dual CF slots, etc., but hadn't considered the better color detail and dynamic range.

Here's a D700 vs D3s at ISO 6400 under incandescent light (LR temp = 2400, tint = 0), same lens, shot minutes apart under the same lighting:

Stop it - you're gonna make me want a D3s for the coming season if I can't get a D4! Damn.

Clearly a difference there... Pet fur is an excellent choice for a real-world comparison. Thanks!

I found the ISO comparison below to be informative, and answered some of the questions I had between the D700 and D3s ISO performance when I was seriously looking to buy a D3s. Which I did and just love it.
