The price of the version II is going to be really high, out of reach for many people, so the version I lenses will continue to command a decent price, but still low when compared to the version II.

There was a used one at BH last week, I think it was a 9 or 9+ for I think $5200. I probably should've snagged it. Keep your eye on their used section.

Used ones, in good to excellent condition, come up for sale almost weekly on eBay, and generally sell for between US$5,500 and US$6,000. Occasionally I see one sell on eBay in the high US$6K range, but that is rare. So, if you really want one at a reasonable price, eBay is worth a try.

i dont see a reason why the price for the used 500mm IS Mark-1 is still rocket high? is it only for the time being till Mk-2 comes to rock and roll?
an year ago it was 5200 to 5700 for LNIB
now no one wanna sell below 6.3k
Any clue?
Supply and demand. If they weren't selling well the price would start drifting downwards.

I expected this to happen, which is why I swallowed hard and bought a new one just before they stopped selling them. With the price of the new one so much higher, I figured that, if I decided to sell the lens, I would take little (or no) loss, and I ran a serious risk of having to pay close to $7k for a used one.

There is nk mkII's out yet is there? And no new mk1's?
Which means high used prices for them.
Exactly, and that's not even going into the new lens escalating prices.
The supply of bargain priced used 500 f/4 lenses on eBay and Craig's list has also dried up which means that people who flip them for profit do not have them either.
All in all, on a long term basis, I see about $2.5k price difference between a (LN) copy of 500 f/4 IS MKI and brand new 500 f/4 IS MkII, once the MkII price comes down some.

heck it might go higher, not so many can afford the new one and they stopped making the old one, so demand goes up for the old one and the price stays high or goes even higher

Why are used 600mm f/4 IS lenses about the same price as used 500mm f/4 IS lenses
Perhaps one of the reasons is that the demand for 600 f/4 MkI is lower.
600 f/4 MkI is a very heavy and unwieldy lens. Those people who want 600mm and who value lens portability and their own comfort, will try to stretch their budgets every which way in order to get the much lighter Mk II version.
Because of their phenomenal weight reduction, 400 II and 600 II are game changers. The 300 II and 500 II are not IMO.

Speaking only for myself, I chose to pay $7k for a new 500 a few months ago, rather than the same price for a LN 600, because I can hand hold the 500 for brief periods, and I didn't think I could do that with the 600. The extra reach wasn't worth, to me, the loss in portability.
