Actually one of my single biggest hopes, more than for more MP (although there really is no reason you can't get both), for the 5D3 is that they raise the low ISO DR 3 stops (2 stops at absolutely worst).
Sure for many shots it makes no difference but I keep coming across shots with super dramatic lighting that I took under conditions where there is no easy or even any way at all to get around low DR limitations.
I realllly hope they fix the low ISO banding and lower the general read noise a lot. It would be so nice to have files that you can work on, or better, than the ones from the Sony column ADC sensors!
For landscapes and general, sure more MP would be nice, panning around 40MP at 100% would be fun and cool and having a hyper PPI 13x19" print would be awesome but a 300PPI vs a hyper PPI print makes less difference to the eye than 3 stops less DR when you need it.
For wildlife more MP matter more than DR, I think, for the most part though.
Hopefully they give us both (high MP really shouldn't hurt lower ISO DR much since the read noise it what really counts there), but if they did stick with the 1DX sensor I reallly hope they found a way to fix up the DR. They have made zero progress on that for a while and the Sony sensors have blow past them in ways that are very real. (6fps would be nice and at least 1D4 AF would be too. )

Are you saying the 1DX sensor does not have improved low ISO dynamic range? The performance of this sensor tells us everything. If we do not see any improvement in this department for this sensor, it's unlikely we'll see anything better from other Canon releases within the next couple of years. I believe all the sample 1DX shots released so far are from jpegs and relatively high ISO (400 to 1600).

We have no 100 iso 1Dx sample to compare so far but D800 has set a new wide DR low iso noise benchmark. These are 36mp - 100% crops from available D800 low iso samples:

I'm saying I don't know if it does. I hope so. Some minor hints make me think maybe not as much as we hope. But hopefully it will.

The newer Sony sensors are practically immune to banding, at least judgung from my D7000 and Nex 5N experience. Assuming the D800 is a Sony design, I would be very surprised to see it exhibit bad banding.

if this benchmark can be archieved by anyone then why only 18mp 1Dx - is it because the frame rate constraint or something else that can't be solved by Canon. This subject is more important than number of AF points for new 5D(3/X) replacement Canon better show some of their real works ASAP. Why pixel king willing to steps down from 21mp

It's hard for a company like Canon or Nikon to compete with the electronics giant Sony. They make numerous devices that require low electronic noise and you can bet that these technologies and designs are in the CMOS sensor and its readout electronics.

I wonder if the column ADC of Sony is what makes it possible and I wonder if that is under their patent or it's free for all, even if it is, is it something that Canon's fab could easily make?

Sony sure lost a lot of money last year while Canon actually made a little. Sony TVs and audio components have really tanked. Hopefully their photo products will help make up for it...

I'm hoping that Canon is working on the same thing , more DR at higher ISO , for its 1.6 crop cameras my 550d is great up to ISO 800 but the dynamic range drops off after that

In 2009 I attended a talk by one of the engineers who designed the sensor for the Sigma cameras. He mentioned that at the time sensor tech captured 40% of all available light. Or in other words, there was only 2.5 stops of available advancement room 4 years ago. While electronics and algorithms can improve, reducing sensor, pattern, and non-uniformity noise, we're already at the end-game for DR on the 35mm format.
In my opinion, 3-stops is unrealistic. I'd be thoroughly impressed if RAW performance at the same MP level increased even 1 stop.

Sony is near the end-game for base ISO DR on their sensors. Canon is not.
