p.1 #1 · New Canon 50mm 1.8 IS ( on the works )

Lots of lenses mentioned
I received what appears to be some kind of lens roadmap. I only ever remember seeing a communication like this one once in the past. There are definitely some interesting concepts listed. Take all of this with the grain of salt.

EF 50 1.8 IS, status gprototypeh, has tag gspring 2013
EF 50 2.5 macro was tagged with gto be replacedh
EF 200 2.8 L IS macro is tagged with gtestingh, gpatents pendingh, and gautumn 2013
EF 24-70 2.8 L II tagged gfinalh, gwinter 2011
EF 100-400 4-5.6 L IS tagged gfinalh, gautumn 2012
EF 35 1.4 L II tagged gprototypeh, gwinter 2012
EF 60 L IS lens tagged gprototypeh

Some odd duck EF-S zooms

EF-S 20-65 IS
EF-S 45-105 IS status gdevelopmenth
EF-S 55-70 IS gtestingh
EF-S 70-400 IS gprototypeh

The one that seems the most interesting above is the EF 50 f/1.8 IS. That could become a replacement to the 50 f/1.4 and put some separation between it and the 50 f/1.2L.

50 1.8 IS as a replacement for the 50 1.4 would be disappointing. I'd rather have 1.4, good build quality, USM, and no IS.

Question: What is your obsession with g's and h's?

That's rhetorical btw

I doubt the 50/1.4 would be replaced by a 50/1.8 IS--I would think that the latter would replace the current 50/1.8 II

The only thing exciting on that list is Autumn 2012 for the new 100-400 And it matches previous rumours of getting down to F4 at the wide end. I love my current 100-400 but will consider the upgrade. However, I can only cringe at the expected price point after seeing the 24-70. Interesting that the 24-70 was listed as winter 2011. Looks like they just missed that time frame but fairly close considering the natural disasters.

Seeing what canon have charged for the 2 new slow with IS primes I fear for the price of any new primes to come out.

An EF 50 1.8 IS USM would likely cost $649.

Id rather see a 50 2.5 macro IS than a 1.8 IS. Adding that I hope I can afford a 100-400 upgrade when it comes.

Why am I becoming really glad that I don't need new lenses for a while...

With what Canon is charging for anything new, I'll second that opinion. With the new stuff thats been announced, I only spend money in my imagination.

Thanks - the new prices is one reason, but I also don't find anything missing regarding IQ or handling with my current lens setup. No need at all for a new 24-70, 35/1.4 etc. The only thing I miss a bit in Canon's line would be a 400/5.6 with new IS. So far the 100-400 does the job well for me, but I mostly use the zoom lens at 400 mm.

I would pay £250 for a new Canon 50mm f1.8 with reasonable build quality. Don't care about IS at this focal length.

Until then I will soldier on with my 50mm Nikkor on an adaptor! Really really hate build "quality" of the current Canon 50mm f1.8. Time it was made respectable IMHO.

They are speculating the price to be around $3000 for a new 100-400.

Totally insane.

I would imagine it would fetch that easily, at least $2800.

If they can give me 4 stop IS, rotating zoom and IQ comparable to the current 70-200 lineup (maybe not the 2.8mkII) then I've got $3000 just waiting for this lens.

Hah so the lens that needs updating more than any other is not on the list.

Canon 50mm 1.4? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Wow.

They do get credit for the 24 2.8 IS since they now have something edge to edge on FF that is wide and under $1000 hah but how can they not fix the 50mm 1.4? It their only lens that has an out and out fundamental design flaw.

I guess they love all the user posts about how Canon cameras can't focus at f/1.4?

Or the income stream from constant AF repairs?

How can they not just take the same optics even and redo the housing and plop a proper, non-breaking, accurately focusing ring USM unit into it?

The 2 new primes (24mm and 28mm f/2.8 IS) were not on that list (the 24-70mm f/2.8L II was), so that doesn't mean a new 50mm f/1.4 isn't in the works. I'm hoping they release it as an optional 'kit lens' for the next 5D, as part of the EOS 25th anniversary this year.
