p.1 #3 · Why are there so many 500/4 IS L lenses for sale?
My first thought is why are there so many 500L f4's sold?!
No doubt a great lens and one I lust after. But $6-7K for a hobby is hard to accept.
Personally I am waiting to see about the 200-400. Probably foolishly, since its more likely to cost more, not less than the discontinued 500. We will see.
Love this hobby, but OUCH!!!!!

I wish I'd bought a 500 before they were discontinued now that I see the market for them. In Canada we can actually purchase the supertelephotos for a considerable lower price than the US (same as the 5dMkII). I have no idea why this is as most lenses are priced higher than the US and even when I order from B&H I still save money after shipping/handling. The 500 is listed in Canada at a respected store for $6293 but of course there is no longer new stock so impossible to buy. The used price is higher than this but of course its because the new version is a lot more.

Before 500 f/4 was discontinued, B&H and Adorama had been selling it for $6,990 US.
A year ago I got mine in Canada for about $6,500 + 13% tax, That was the best price I was able to get at the time.
Today, the stores can list all kinds of low prices on new 500 f/4s, which are absolutelly meaningless because they do not have the lens, nor can they get it from Canon any longer.
500 f/4 MkII is coming, but its price is pushing towards $10k. As I figure that the MkII key improvements are only a moderate weight reduction and 4 stop IS, I do not see a mad dash to sell the MkI and buy the MkII. Consequently, I do not expect that the market will be flooded with used 500 MkIs any time soon.

Yeah, I agree that I think most 500 owners are satisfied with their beast and only a few will really feel the need to upgrade at such high costs. The new 500 doesn't shave off as much as the 400 or 600 did and I'm not sure how much IS is used on these long lenses when most shoot off of tripods. I would guess if people were to ditch their 500s it may be for the 600MKII that is now equal in weight and MFD specs as the 500MK1 but gains the 100mm and better IS.

I left after 12 years[ 2 copy's] the 500 lens.
bought a 400II, because off the 2.8. [ and now the weight is acceptable]
with the teleconverters, I have the most wishfull range, I think.
the 500 is fantastic glass, but the light I miss to often for my photography.
the new 400 gives me everything.

Got a mint one for $4800 almost 1 1/2 yrs ago. Then added a few hundred in extras(kinesis, zeck, rrs and lenscoat. The newer prices are beyond my buget. If I sell this one I will be out of long lenses.

Several years ago I purchased a used 500 at a bargain price (less than $4000) and even though I would love the new 600, I cannot come close to affording that price. The 500 was a stretch for me. What I am really hoping for is an improved, maybe lighter, 100-400.

One thing that will tempting for the current 500 MK1 owners is an upgrade to the 600 II at close to the same weight, just 2" longer and roughly the same MFD, add a 1.4 III and you have a good 840 f5.6 lens. This could be also part of the story on the used 500 market.

Doug, sure, the temptation is there, however, the $13k price tag for 600 f/4 IS MkII should ensure that not many people will be casting their 500 f/4 MkIs away like an old shoe.

No problem, Doug, but I must caution you that I need some therapy myself very badly, and my counseling of others usually ends up with them getting one of each.
