Hi All,
A friend and I are planning a trip on the Cabot Trail/PEI/Nova Scotia from May 24th to June 3. Looks like it will be chilly ranges from mid 30's to mid 50's and we are going to camp unless the weather is really bad. I've been told to expect lots of rain. Just wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions for particularly good landscape opportunities in the area? I have read many good things about the Trail and am planning on a return visit to Peggy's Cove. If anyone local wants to meet for a cup of coffee/tea that would be great also. Thanks for the help in advance. Best, Bob
When you drive the Cabot Trail, many opportunities will jump out at you. I particularly enjoyed Neil's Harbor (fishing village), Celtic Lodge and Meat Cove (a bit of a drive off the trail). There is a bog on the north end that was worth a stop. Last time there was 2006, may have changed some.
I enjoyed the red coast of PEI, and the Confederation Bridge, of course. Also, Anne of Green Gables house.
Nova Scotia has too much to mention. All around the coast are beautiful towns and villages, and beautiful churches, lighthouses, etc. Five Islands is a good place to observe the Bay of Fundy tidal action. From Digby, drive down to Brier Island and take a whale watching tour.
I was there many years ago (1994) around the same time of year. A couple things I learned at the time was to check out the fresh lobster season. You may be able to go down to the docks and buy some lobsters from the fishermen!
There are still some working fishing villages along the trail that I would suggest you stop in at to take some photos. I know this isn't strictly landscape photography but the villages are beautiful as well!
I did camp at Peggy's cove at the time and the proprietor thought we were crazy wanting to sleep outside in a tent at that time of year so he let us choose any campsite we wanted free of charge! He even came out to check on us in the morning and brought us fresh coffee. I would love to hear your experiences with the campgrounds there to see if the friendly attitudes have changed much. Someday I'll have to make a return visit as I didn't have a camera back then.
I loved PEI as well so if you can get to the island, I would highly recommend it. Although I do think that I was lucky to have been there before the bridge was built, I think some of the charm has been lost with the construction of the bridge.
